When the engine is cold, the engine control unit operates in open loop mode, resulting in a richer fuel-air mixture being supplied to the engine cylinders and an increased idle speed. This continues until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
X22SE and Y22SE engines
Removal
Remove the lower engine compartment protection.
Drain the coolant from the engine cooling system.

Remove the exhaust gas recirculation system valve (1) (see the relevant chapter).

Disconnect the coolant temperature sender (2) connector.
Remove the coolant temperature sensor from the adapter housing.
Installation
Install the coolant temperature sensor to the adapter housing.
Connect the connector to the coolant temperature sensor.
Install the exhaust gas recirculation valve (see the relevant chapter).
Install the lower engine compartment protection.
Fill the engine cooling system with coolant, bleed the cooling system and check the cooling system for leaks (see the relevant chapter).
Engine 3.2 l (6VD1-W)
Warning: Be careful when removing the coolant temperature sensor as it may be damaged if dropped or impacted.
Removal
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
Disconnect the connector from the coolant temperature sensor.
To collect any leaking coolant, place a suitable container under the engine.
Unscrew the coolant temperature sensor from the housing.

Apply a thin layer of sealant to the sensor threads.
Screw the coolant temperature sensor into the housing and tighten it to a torque of 30 N·m.
Connect the connector to the coolant temperature sensor.
Connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
Fill the engine cooling system with coolant, bleed the cooling system and check the cooling system for leaks (see the relevant chapter).
