Rear Hub Bearings — Replacement (Opel Ascona C)

1. Raise the rear of the car and remove the road wheel (see Chapter 9, Section 3).

2. Remove the brake drums (Chapter 9).

3. Remove the dust cap and remove the cotter pin from the toothed nut (photo).

4. Remove the nut and thrust washer (photo).

5. Remove the hub from the short axle.

6. Pull out the oil seal from the inner end of the hub and then pull out the inner raceways of the outer and inner bearings.

7. Press or pull the outer bearing races out of the hub.

8. Insert new outer bearing races into the hub.

9. Install the inner bearing raceway and oil seal. Generously lubricate the bearing and oil seal lips and half fill the space between the outer races of the two bearings with grease (photo).

10. Install the hub on the short axle, insert the outer bearing raceway, thrust washer and nut.

11. Perform adjustments as described in the previous Section.
