1. Raise the rear of the car and place on stands, remove the wheels.
2. Remove drums (or disks) brakes.
3. Check the axial and radial play of the hub using a dial indicator or a ruler and a set of feeler gauges. Set the indicator to zero on the outer edge of the hub flange. To measure end play, place the indicator foot against the surface of the hub that is against the drum or disc. To measure the radial play, install the indicator leg strictly along the radius on the outer edge of the hub.
Slowly turning the hub, determine the maximum reading of the indicator, which is equal to the amount of runout. If the runout is excessive, replace the hub and bracket.
4. Check the amount of skew (inclination) bearing To do this, fasten a rigid ruler on the hub with 2 wheel bolts (polished metal bar), install the indicator leg on the surface of the hub and, by shaking the hub by the ruler, determine the indicator reading. If the misalignment exceeds the norm, then replace the hub and bracket.
