Note: The rear wheel hub seal must be replaced during assembly.
1. If the bearing rattles when the wheel spins fast and the wheel moves unevenly when the wheel spins slowly, the bearing is worn and should be replaced. Note that each hub runs on two tapered roller bearings, and if wear is evident, both bearings should be replaced.
2. Remove hub (Chapter 13).
3. If the outer bearing inner race is still in the hub, remove it using a pry bar.
4. Remove the oil seal from the inner end of the hub and remove the inner race of the inner bearing (see illustration).
5. Install the hub on blocks or clamp it in a vise, then push or knock out the outer races of the bearings.
6. Thoroughly clean the hub bore with kerosene or thinner.
7. Before installing new bearings, remove any burrs that may be in the hub bore using a fine file or scraper.
8. Install the new bearing outer races with the larger diameter side facing outward from the center of the hub. Drive the rings into place with a metal tube. Make sure that the rings are not twisted during installation, otherwise they may get stuck and split.
9. Fill the bearing races with lithium grease and generously lubricate the space between the bearing races.
10. Position the inner bearing inner race in position, lubricate the sealing lip of the new oil seal, and drive the oil seal into place using a pipe or ram. Make sure the seal is not twisted.
11. Install the hub and adjust the wheel bearing clearance as described in Chapter 13 and Chapter 10.
