Note: When installing, secure the hub nut with a new cotter pin.
Models with rear drum brakes
Removing
1. Where applicable, remove the cap, then loosen the rear wheel bolts. Block the front wheels, then jack up and support the rear of the vehicle on axle stands. Remove the wheel.
2. Remove the brake drum as described in Section 9.
3. Remove, using a screwdriver as a lever, the dust cap of the hub.
4. Remove the cotter pin from the end of the stub axle, then remove the hub nut. If the hub nut is tight, block the hub by installing two wheel bolts and inserting a long screwdriver or similar tool between them.
5. Remove the hub nut and thrust washer from the stub axle, then remove the hub. Be prepared for the outer bearing inner race to fall out of the hub when it is removed.
Installation
6. Install the hub and outer bearing inner race onto the stub axle. Be careful not to damage the oil seal installed on the inner end of the hub.
7. Install the thrust washer and hub nut, then adjust the wheel bearing clearance as described in steps 4-6 Chapters 10.
8. Secure the hub nut using a new cotter pin, then install the hub dust cap.
9. Install the brake drum as described in Section 9 and check the handbrake adjustment as described in Section 9.
10. Lower the vehicle to the ground and finally tighten the wheel bolts. Where applicable, install wheel cap.
Models with rear disc brakes
Removing
11. On models with rear disc brakes, the hub is built into the brake disc.
12. Proceed as described in point 1.
13. Remove the brake caliper as described in Section 9, but do not disconnect the brake pipe. Move the caliper to the side and tie it to the body using a piece of wire or rope so as not to deform the tube.
14. Proceed as described in points 3 and 4.
15. Remove the hub nut and washer from the stub axle, then remove the hub/disc. If this fails, move the handbrake pads away from the support plate by inserting a screwdriver through the adjusting hole in the hub/disc and turning the adjuster wheel. Be prepared for the outer bearing inner race to fall out of the hub/disc assembly when it is removed.
Installation
16. Install the hub/disc assembly and outer bearing inner race onto the stub axle. Be careful not to damage the oil seal installed on the inner end of the hub/disc. If necessary, move the brake pads with the adjuster wheel so that they do not interfere with the installation.
17. Proceed as described in points 7 and 8.
18. Check the handbrake adjustment as described in Section 9, then install the brake caliper as described in Section 9.
19. Lower the vehicle to the ground and finally tighten the wheel bolts. Where applicable, install wheel cap.
