Removing
1. Where applicable, remove the cap, then loosen the rear wheel bolts. Block the front wheels, jack up and support the rear of the vehicle on axle stands. Remove the wheel.
2. Release the handbrake.
3. Remove the drum fixing screw and remove the drum. If this fails, remove the inspection plug, the holes in the support shield and push the handbrake control lever against the brake shoe to move the shoes away from the drums. If necessary, loosen the handbrake cable tension using the adjuster.
Inspection
4. Scrape dirt and dust from the drum, being careful not to inhale airborne particles.
5. Inspect the rubbing surface of the drum. If it has deep scratches or is worn down to a hole the width of a shoe, you will sweep both drums.
6. Regrinding the drum is not recommended.
Installation
7. Install the brake drum and tighten the fastening screw. If necessary, move the shoes away from the drum by turning the adjuster wheel.
8. Adjust the brakes by depressing the brake pedal several times. You will hear clicks in the drum, as the automatic gap compensator will work. When the clicks stop, the adjustment is complete.
9. Install the wheel and lower the vehicle to the ground. Do not fully tighten the wheel bolts until the vehicle is lowered onto the wheels.
