Removing
Attach the front wheels, then raise the rear of the vehicle and secure it to stands under the axle.
Fully release the handbrake.
Loosen the drum lock screw and remove the drum. If the drum is tight, remove the plug from the hole in the disc and press the lever to move the pads away from the drums. If necessary, loosen the handbrake cable adjuster as follows.
Examination
Brush off dirt and dust from the drum, being careful not to inhale the dust.
Inspect the working surfaces of the drum. If they are badly scratched or worn so that a wear band the width of the pads has formed, then both drums must be replaced.
Grinding of working surfaces is not recommended, since the inner diameter of the drum will no longer correspond to the contact diameter of the friction linings of the shoes.
Installation
Install the drum and tighten the screw. If necessary, unscrew the fine adjustment knob until the drum sits on the brake shoes.
Adjust the brakes with the foot brake. Clicks will be heard in the drum during the operation of the automatic regulator. When the clicking stops, the adjustment is complete.
Install the road wheel and lower the vehicle to the ground.
