Rear Brake Drum — Removal, Checking and Installation (Opel Astra F)

Removal

Secure the front wheels, then jack up the rear of the car and support it securely on stands under the axle.

Release the handbrake completely.

Loosen the drum lock screw and remove the drum. If the drum is tight, remove the plug from the hole in the disc and press the lever to move the shoes away from the drums. If necessary, loosen the handbrake cable adjuster as shown below.

Examination

Use a brush to remove dirt and dust from the drum, being careful not to inhale the dust.

Inspect the drum working surfaces. If they are heavily scratched or worn to the point that a wear strip with the width of the shoes has formed, then both drums must be replaced.

Grinding of the working surfaces is not recommended, since the internal diameter of the drum will no longer correspond to the contact diameter of the friction linings of the shoes.

Installation

Install the drum and tighten the screw. If necessary, unscrew the fine adjustment knob until the drum sits on the brake shoes.

Adjust the brakes using the foot brake. You will hear clicking sounds in the drum as the automatic regulator operates. When the clicking sounds stop, the adjustment is complete.

Install the running wheel and lower the vehicle to the ground.
