Rear Brake Shield — Removal and Installation (Opel Vectra A)

Models with rear drum brakes



Removal



1. Where applicable, remove the wheel cap, then loosen the rear wheel bolts. Block the front wheels, jack up and support the rear of the vehicle on axle stands. Remove the wheel.

2. Remove the brake drum (see Chapter 11).

3. Remove the rear wheel hub (Section 10).

4. Remove the brake pads (Chapter 6).

5. Remove the brake wheel cylinder as described in Chapter 12.

6. Using a screwdriver as a lever, remove the locking plate securing the handbrake cable to the drum brake support plate.

7. Loosen the four mounting bolts and remove the steering knuckle and drum brake support shield.

Installation



8. Perform installation in reverse order, paying attention to the following.

9. Coat the rear surface of the stub axle flange with a small amount of lithium grease.

10. Tighten the support shield/steering knuckle mounting bolts to the torque specified in the Specifications (in three stages).

11. Install the brake master cylinder as described in Chapter 12.

12. Install the brake pads as described in Chapter 6.

13. Install the rear wheel hub as described in Section 10.

14. Install the brake drum - see. Chapter 11.

15. Before installing the wheel and lowering the vehicle to the ground, check and, if necessary, adjust the handbrake as described in Chapter 26.

Models with rear disc brakes (sOHC models)



Removal



16. Proceed as described in points 1-7.



17. Remove the rear wheel hub/disc (Section 10).

18. Remove the handbrake shoes (Chapter 7).

19. Unscrew the four mounting bolts and remove the steering knuckle and support shield.

Installation



20. Perform installation in reverse order, paying attention to the following.

21. Coat the rear surface of the stub axle flange with a small amount of lithium grease.

22. Tighten the support shield/steering knuckle mounting bolts to the specified tightening torque Specifications (in three stages).

23. Install the handbrake shoes as described in Chapter 7.

24. Install the rear wheel hub disc (Section 10)

25. Before installing the wheel and lowering the vehicle to the ground, check and, if necessary, adjust the handbrake as described in Chapter 26.

Models with two overhead camshafts (DOHC)



Removal



26. Proceed as described in points 1-7.

27. Remove the brake disc (Chapter 10).

28. Remove the rear wheel hub (Section 10).

29. Remove the handbrake shoes (Chapter 7).

30. Using a slotted wrench, unscrew the four mounting bolts and remove the handbrake support shield.

Installation



31. Perform installation in reverse order, paying attention to the following.

32. Install the handbrake shoes (Chapter 7).

33. Install the rear wheel hub (Section 10).

34. Install the brake disc (Chapter 10).

35. Before installing the wheel and lowering the vehicle to the ground, check and, if necessary, adjust the handbrake as described in Chapter 26.
