1. All work on the airbag may only be carried out with a certain amount of experience. An auto mechanic who does not know the airbag device is not allowed to work. The airbag kit includes a control unit, a warning lamp, the airbag itself in the steering wheel or the front passenger airbag, a contact assembly and a cable harness.
2. Airbag work is controlled by explosives laws in some countries.
3. If a front passenger airbag is fitted, do not install accessories such as handset mounts, drink bottle holders, cassette holders, additional mirrors, etc., near the airbag area. These items may interfere with the deployment of the airbag.
4. It is not allowed to open any elements of the system in question.
5. Pillow elements are sensitive. If the airbag is dropped, its function may be impaired.
6. If the vehicle is to be painted, the workshop must be informed of the presence of the airbag, as the airbag must not be exposed to temperatures above 90°C.
7. When performing welding work, disconnect the mass cable from the battery. If welding is carried out near the control box, it is recommended to remove the control box. In any case, the cable harness must be disconnected.
When removing and installing, as well as when replacing steering parts:
1. Switch off the ignition.
2. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery and cover the negative pole of the battery so that no metal object gets on it.
3. After disconnecting the battery, wait a minute to allow the control box capacitor to discharge.
4. When working on the steering, such as the steering wheel, tie rods, steering column, etc. set the steering to the middle position.
5. When removing the steering wheel, set the steering to the middle position in order to prevent damage to the contact assembly during subsequent assembly.
6. If the airbag has deployed in an emergency, then not only the airbag itself, but also the control unit must be replaced.
7. The airbag steering wheel may only be replaced by another steering wheel approved by Opel.
8. If the airbag is removed, it must be placed with the soft side up.
9. The soft side of the airbag should only be cleaned with a towel dampened with water or with a cleaner recommended by Opel.
10. Before installing the airbag, check that the battery is disconnected and closed and that the ignition is switched off.
After disconnecting the battery, certain memory drives must be reprogrammed. This refers to power windows, clock and radio coding.
Instruction. The following description of the work only indicates the removal and installation of parts required to remove the steering.
Removal and installation of the airbag assembly
1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery and wait one minute. The control box capacitor should discharge.
2. Remove the four mounting bolts from the steering wheel side and remove the airbag assembly. Two of the four bolts are shown in the illustration. The other two are on the opposite side. In the illustration, the steering wheel has been removed.
3. Disconnect the plug connection of the airbag assembly.
The airbag is installed in the reverse order of removal.
1. Tighten the bolts to 8 Nm. In this case, first tighten two bolts on one side, and then two bolts on the other, that is, the sequence corresponding to the numbering in the illustration is observed.
Removal and installation of the contact node
1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery and wait one minute.
2. Remove the airbag assembly as described above.
3. Remove the steering wheel as described above.
4. Turn away six bolts and remove the bottom cover of the panel of devices shown on an illustration.
5. Turn away six bolts and remove a casing of facing of a steering column.
6. Disconnect the plug-in connection between the combination switch and the contact assembly.
7. Turn away four bolts and remove contact knot from a steering column.
8. When installing the contact assembly, install exactly in the middle position. To do this, turn the coil a full turn clockwise and then 2.5 turns counterclockwise so that the two markings match. When installing, check that the steering is in the middle position.
9. Other work is carried out in the reverse order of removal. Steering wheel installation is described in a separate subsection.
10. Establish details of a casing of facing of a steering wheel according to an illustration and fix them with six bolts.
11. Finally, connect the battery. No one should be in the car at the same time.
