Checking the timing belt tension (Opel Frontera B)

Notes:

• Checking the tension only applies to timing belts that are installed and running on the engine.
• When installing a new timing belt, see. chapter "Adjusting the timing belt tension".
• Check the timing belt tension on a cold engine.

Remove the front cover of the timing belt drive of the gas distribution mechanism.



Unscrew the bolts and remove the vibration damper, while using the second wrench on the bolt to hold the crankshaft pulley from turning.

Using the pulley mounting bolt, turn the engine crankshaft in the direction of operating rotation until the mark (3) on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the mark on the front cover of the cylinder block.

Make sure that the marks (1) on the camshaft pulleys are aligned with the marks on the cylinder head. Using special tool KM-853 (2), secure the camshaft pulleys.

Check the installation position of the water pump and adjust it if necessary. The protrusion (2) on the water pump must be aligned with the indicator (1) on the cylinder block.



The timing belt tension is adjusted correctly when the pointer (4) on the belt tensioner is positioned 4 mm to the left of the centre of the recess (3).



If the timing belt tension is not as required, adjust it (see chapter "Adjusting the timing belt tension").

Install the front cover of the timing belt drive of the gas distribution mechanism.

Install the vibration damper and secure it with bolts, tightening them to a torque of 20 Nm, while using a second wrench on the bolt to hold the crankshaft pulley from turning.
