Examination
To check the tension of the toothed belt, a KM-510 A control device is required. Pressing the water pump in order to tension the toothed belt facilitates the KM-421 key.
Careful assembly and correct tension have a significant impact on the life of the toothed belt.
A new toothed belt should be installed on a cold engine whenever possible. The engine temperature must be below +25°C.
Remove the toothed belt cover.
Check the tension in the driven branch -B- on that side of the belt, but which is not under load. The control device should be installed at the top of the toothed belt.
Pull branch -A-. To do this, use a wrench to turn the crankshaft half a turn (turn in the direction of rotation of the motor). Cylinder number one must be at top dead center, see fig. below.
Install the cocked control above the alternator on an unloaded branch of the toothed belt and slowly reduce the torque to the wrench, See Fig. B5504.
The toothed belt must pass between points A-B and C. The tension gauge must be in the cavity between the teeth.
Read the value of the toothed belt tension on the control device. Compare the read value with the required one. Adjust belt tension if necessary, See Fig. B5504.
Attention: In cars with a headlight washer, the fluid reservoir makes it difficult to read the readings of the measuring device. Therefore, use a mirror to read the readings of the device.

Adjustment
Engines 1.2-p and 1.3 l key OPEL KM-424-A. Engines 1.6-l and 1.8-l key OPEL KM-509.
Loosen the water pump sprinkling bolts.
Use a special key for the water pump KM 509/421 or the usual 41 mm to adjust the toothed belt, while turning up the tension increases, down - decreases. When adjusting with a conventional key, you must remove the generator.
Tighten the toothed belt according to the specified value.
Tighten the fixing screws for the coolant pump. Engines 1.2 / 1.3-l 8 Nm. Engines 1.6-/1.8-l 25 Nm.
Remove control device. Rotate the crankshaft in the opposite direction. Make one complete rotation of the crankshaft in the direction of working rotation. Finally, check the belt tension again.
Attention: The toothed belt tension must be corrected until the gauge shows a constant value.
Make another full revolution of the crankshaft and check the toothed belt tension again.
Reinstall the toothed belt guard.
Attention: If there is no device at hand to check the tension of the toothed belt, then temporarily adjust the belt so that when you press it at point B, Figure A7872, it sags by about 10 mm. Avoid high revs. At the earliest opportunity, check with the device.
