Removal and installation the timing belt (Opel Kadett D)

Note: If you want to reuse a timing belt that has been removed, before removing it, you must mark the direction in which it rotated with chalk so that you can install it later in the same position. In addition, the belt must not be bent. Failure to follow these rules may result in the belt breaking at some point and causing major damage to the engine.

Removal

Remove the protective cover.



Set the piston of the first cylinder to the ignition position. To do this, align the marking on the camshaft wheel with the marking on the housing. To do this, engage 4th gear and push the car. If it is parked on the trestles, then with 4th gear engaged, turn the front wheel.

At the same time, the mark on the engine crankcase must be aligned with the notch on the V-belt pulley. If the markings do not match, rotate the crankshaft until they are aligned.



Loosen the generator mount and remove the V-belt, see item 22.3.



Remove the belt pulley (Engines 1.2/1.3-l). To do this, engage first gear and set the handbrake.



1.6-/1.8-l engines: remove the torsional vibration damper from the timing belt drive (4 screws).



Unscrew the coolant pump (arrow).

Using a 41mm or 36mm spanner, the coolant pump can be turned so that the timing belt tension is changed and can be removed. However, the alternator must first be removed.

If you have removed the timing belt, the position of the engine crankshaft can no longer be changed.

Installation

Caution: Before installation, check (match the marking of the camshaft wheel with the marking on the camshaft housing and the marking of the V-belt pulley with the pointer on the engine housing. To do this, fit the pulley. check and remove again, see above.

Put on the timing belt.



Tighten the timing belt by turning the water pump.

Tighten the water pump with a torque of 8 Nm, 1.6-l engines 25 Nm.

1.2-/1.3-l engines: put the belt pulley on the crankshaft, insert the screws (OPEL No.1503165) and tighten them to 55 Nm. At the same time, engage 1st gear and apply the handbrake.

1.6/1.8-l engines: secure the torsional vibration damper using 4 screws with a torque of 50 Nm.

Place the V-belt on the pulley and tighten it, see item 22.3.



Make a full revolution of the crankshaft and check the timing belt tension again.

Install the timing belt guard.
