The rear timing belt cover found on 1991 and 1992 models with 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines has a small opening just above the oil pump housing. In some circumstances foreign particles may enter (e.g. gravel) through this opening, which may cause the toothed drive belt to jump on the sprockets. For this reason, it is desirable to close the opening. A cover without an opening has been installed on models since 1993.
There is a special device in the form of a rubber stopper (serial number 90469594), to close the specified opening. On non-power steering models, this tool can be inserted into the cover opening from above. On power steering models, the rubber band can be reinstalled from below. If access is difficult, especially if a ribbed drive belt is installed, it may be easier to remove the power steering alternator/pump drive belt as described in Section 5. Install belt and adjust tension where necessary.
