Disassembly
1. After removing the camshaft cover from the cylinder head as described in Chapter 18, proceed as follows.
2. Remove the distributor and related components as described in Section 5 and, on C16NZ2, 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines, carefully remove the rear camshaft oil seal with a screwdriver.
3. On carburetor models, remove the fuel priming pump, guided by Section 4A, if it is needed.
4. Working on the distributor end of the camshaft, remove the two bolts securing the camshaft fixing plate using a socket wrench (see illustration).
5. Remove the fixing plate, noting its orientation (see illustration).
6. Carefully remove the camshaft from the housing through the side on which the distributor is installed, be careful not to damage the bearing journals (see illustration).
Inspection
7. After removing the camshaft, check the condition of the bearings in the camshaft housing. If any damage is found, the camshaft housing must be replaced.
8. The camshaft must not have any marks or scratches on the cam surfaces or journals. If these damages are found, replace the camshaft. Please note that when replacing the camshaft, you will also need to change all the rocker arms.
9. Check up a condition of a fixing plate of a cam-shaft, replace at detection of damages.
10. If the camshaft was removed, it is recommended to always replace the front camshaft oil seal. Remove the old seal with a screwdriver (see illustration).
Assembly
11. Carefully hammer the new front oil seal into place using a socket or tube. On C16NZ2, 1.8 and 2.0 liter models, install a new camshaft rear oil seal. On other models, replace the distributor O-ring (see illustrations).
12. Before reassembly, generously lubricate the bearings in the housing and the packing lip with oil. Carefully insert the camshaft into the housing from the side of the distributor, make sure that the bearing is not damaged.
13. Install the fixing plate, tighten the fixing bolts (see illustration). Check the camshaft end play by inserting a feeler gauge between the fixing plate and the camshaft end play flange. If the axial clearance exceeds the specified limit, replace the fixing plate.
14. Where applicable, install the fuel priming pump according to Section 4A, if it is needed.
15. Install the distributor as described in Section 5.
16. Install the camshaft housing as described in Chapter 18.
17. If a new camshaft is being installed, it is important to follow the following break-in schedule (unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer) immediately after the first start of the engine:
- One minute at 2000 rpm
- One minute at 1500 rpm
- One minute at 3000 rpm
- One minute at 2000 rpm
18. Don't change your engine oil (except filter if needed) approximately 1000 km after installing a new camshaft.
