Removing
Removal with tool
With a special tool, the camshaft can be removed from the engine without first dismantling the gas distribution housing. The device is installed on the body of the mechanism with the cover of the latter removed (see Section Removal and installation of a cover of the gas-distributing mechanism) and allows you to push the hydraulic valve clearance compensators. Next is the dismantling of the gear shaft (see Section Removal and installation of timing gears), end cap and thrust plate. Now the shaft can be removed from the housing through the hole in its left end.
Removing the camshaft using a special tool
Turn the crankshaft 90 degrees before installing the tool. from TDC position (see Section Procedures for repairing SOHC gasoline engines without removing them from the vehicle), which will prevent the risk of engine damage due to the valves being brought into contact with the piston crowns.
Removal without the use of a special tool
Without the use of a special tool, the camshaft can only be removed from the engine complete with the timing case. Since the body is bolted with the same bolts as the cylinder head, the dismantling of the latter is also implied (see Section Removal and installation of a head of cylinders).
1. Having removed the gas distribution housing with the camshaft installed in it, on X12SZ and C14SE engines disconnect the ignition module, and C14NZ engine remove the ignition distributor.

2. On X12SZ and C14SE engines unscrew the fixing bolts and remove the end cover mounted on the left side of the timing case. Remove the sealing ring from the body - you can throw it away, since the ring must be replaced without fail during assembly.

3. Measure the end play of the camshaft by inserting the feeler blades between the thrust plate and the shaft. If the measurement result is out of range (see Specifications in Chapter Engines), the thrust plate must be replaced. Unscrew the two fixing bolts and remove the thrust plate from the body - try to remember the installation position of the components.
The stop plate -1- regulating the amount of axial play of the camshaft is mounted on the gas distribution mechanism housing with two screws with heads for a hex bar key
4. Carefully remove the shaft from the housing - try not to damage the bearing journals and the working surfaces of the cams.

Examination
1. Having removed the shaft, examine the condition of the working surfaces of the plain bearings in the housing beds. If there are signs of obvious wear or scoring, the housing must be replaced - also check the condition of the corresponding shaft journals.
Also check the patency of the oil drains provided in the housing.
2. The shaft itself should not have any traces of scratches on the necks and working surfaces of the cams. If such defects occur, the shaft must also be replaced. In case of seizures on the working surfaces of the cams, examine the condition of the drive levers of the corresponding valves (see Section Removal, condition check and installation of valves).
3. Make sure that there are no signs of wear or wear of the camshaft thrust plate, replace the plate if necessary.
Installation
If a new camshaft is installed, all rocker arms and all wear parts of the valve train must be replaced.
1. Using a screwdriver, carefully remove the old oil seal from its seat in the timing case. Check the cleanliness of the walls of the seat, then press a new oil seal into it (sealing lips inside) flush with the outer surface of the housing.
2. Copiously lubricate the camshaft, housing support bearings and seal lips with clean engine oil, then carefully fill the shaft into the housing, being careful not to damage the cams, necks and seal lips.
3. Fill the thrust plate in its regular place, - make sure that it is correctly aligned with the groove in the shaft trunnion. Tighten the fixing bolts to the required torque. Check shaft end play
4. On X12SZ and C14SE engines install a new o-ring on a clean, dry wiped back of the housing and install the end cover and tighten the end cover bolts to the required torque.
5. On X12SZ and C14SE engines install the ignition module on the housing, and on C14NZ engine install the ignition distributor with a new sealing ring.
6. If removal was carried out using a special tool, remove it and reinstall the camshaft gear. Return the crankshaft to TDC and install the timing belt (see Sections Removing and installing timing belt and Removal and installation of timing gears).
7. If the device was not used, install the timing case (see Section Removal and installation of a head of cylinders).
