Removing
Removal using tool Opel No. MKM-891
With the Opel special tool No. MKM-891, the camshaft can be removed from the engine without first dismantling the timing housing. The device is installed on the body of the mechanism with the cover of the latter removed (see Removal and installation of a cover of the gas-distributing mechanism) and allows you to push the hydraulic valve clearance compensators. Next is the dismantling of the gear shaft (see Removal and installation of the timing belt tensioner and timing gears), end cap and thrust plate (see next paragraph). Now the shaft can be removed from the housing through the hole in its left end.
Turn the crankshaft 90°from TDC before installing the tool (see Cylinder Compression Pressure Check), which will prevent the risk of engine damage due to the valves being brought into contact with the piston crowns.
Removal without the use of a special tool
Without the use of a special tool, the camshaft can only be removed from the engine complete with the timing gear housing. Since the body is bolted with the same bolts as the cylinder head, the dismantling of the latter is also implied (see Removal and installation of a head of cylinders).
Theoretically, it is possible to remove the shaft with the housing, leaving the head on the block, however, this is associated with the risk of damaging the gasket. When deciding whether to proceed with this option, refer to Removing and Installing the Sump, taking into account the fact that it is not necessary to remove the intake pipe and exhaust manifold. Remember, however, that after installing the camshaft assembly with the timing housing, it may be necessary to replace the head gasket, which will nullify all efforts to (By the way, very little) saving time.
1. Having removed the gas distribution housing with the camshaft installed in it, unscrew the fixing bolts and remove the ignition module.
2. Turn out fixing bolts and remove the end cover established on the left side of the case of the gas-distributing mechanism. Remove the o-ring from the body - you can throw it away, since the ring must be replaced without fail during assembly.
3. Measure the end play of the camshaft by inserting the feeler blades between the stop plate (1) and shaft. If the measurement result is out of range (see Specifications), the thrust plate must be replaced. Unscrew the two fixing bolts and remove the thrust plate from the housing - try to remember the installation position of the components.
4. Carefully remove the shaft from the housing - try not to damage the bearing journals and the working surfaces of the cams.
Examination
1. Measure your height (I) housing of the gas distribution mechanism from the mating surface to the mating surface. If the measurement is less than 65 mm, replace the housing.
2. Having removed the shaft, examine the condition of the working surfaces of the plain bearings in the housing beds. If there are signs of obvious wear or scoring, the housing must be replaced - also check the condition of the corresponding shaft journals.
Also check the patency of the oil drains provided in the housing.
3. The shaft itself should not have scratches on the necks and working surfaces of the cams. If such defects occur, the shaft must also be replaced. In case of seizures on the working surfaces of the cams, examine the condition of the drive levers of the corresponding valves (see Removal, condition check and installation of components of a drive of valves).
4. Make sure that there are no signs of wear or development of the thrust plate of the camshaft, if necessary, replace the plate.
Installation
1. Using a screwdriver, carefully remove the old oil seal from its seat in the timing case. Check the cleanliness of the walls of the seat, then press a new oil seal into it (sealing lips inside) flush with the outer surface of the housing.
2. Copiously lubricate the camshaft, housing support bearings and seal lips with clean engine oil, then carefully fill the shaft into the housing - try not to damage the cams, necks and seal lips.
3. Fill the thrust plate in its regular place - make sure that it is correctly aligned with the groove in the shaft trunnion. Tighten the fixing bolts to the required torque. Check shaft end play (see above).
4. Install a new O-ring on a clean, dry wiped back of the housing. Install the end cover and tighten the end cover bolts to the required torque.
5. Install the ignition module on the housing.
6. If removal was carried out using a Vauxhall tool, remove it and reinstall the camshaft gear. Return the crankshaft to TDC and install the timing belt (see Removing and installing timing belt and Removal and installation of the timing belt tensioner and timing gears).
7. If the device was not used, install the gas distribution mechanism housing with the shaft inserted into it in its place and fix it with the cylinder head bolts (see Removal and installation of a head of cylinders).
