Right (from the timing drive side) gland
1. Remove the crankshaft timing gear (see Removal and installation the timing belt tensioner and timing drive gears).
2. Carefully drill or punch two holes in the rigid end surface of the seal. Screw a couple of screws into the holes. Grasp the screw heads with pliers and carefully remove the seal from its seat - try not to damage the oil pump housing.
3. Clean the contact surfaces of the seat and the shaft journal, carefully removing any burrs or scratches that could cause the new seal to fail.
4. Lubricate the sealing lips of the new oil seal with clean engine oil and, using a cylindrical mandrel, evenly press the oil seal into the seat with the lips facing inward and flush with the housing surface.

A suitable socket head or a piece of pipe of a suitable diameter can be used as a mandrel; make sure that the mandrel rests only on the rigid edge of the seal.
5. Remove any traces of oil and install the crankshaft gear (see Removal and installation the timing belt tensioner and timing drive gears).
Left (from the flywheel side) gland
1. Remove the flywheel/drive plate (see Removal, checking condition and installing flywheel/drive disk).
2. Carefully drill or punch two holes in the rigid end surface of the seal. Screw a pair of self-tapping screws into the holes. Grasp the screw heads with pliers and carefully remove the seal from its seat.
3. Clean the contact surfaces of the seat and the shaft journal, carefully removing any burrs or scratches that could cause the new seal to fail.
4. Lubricate the sealing lips of the new oil seal with clean engine oil and, using a cylindrical mandrel, evenly press the oil seal into the seat with the lips facing inward and flush with the block surface.

5. Remove any traces of oil and reinstall the flywheel/drive plate (see Removal, checking condition and installing flywheel/drive disk).
