Checking the condition and replacing the powertrain suspension supports (Opel Astra G)

Examination

General layout of the powertrain suspension supports on Opel Astra/Zafira models



1. If necessary, jack up the front of the vehicle and support it to ensure free access. If equipped, remove the crankcase guard.

2. Check the condition of the rubber support cushions. If cracks, delamination, separation from the metal base, signs of rubber hardening, or other similar defects are detected, replace the support.

3. Using a torque wrench, check the tightening force of the support fasteners.

4. Using a crowbar, check the bearings for signs of excessive play. If necessary, ask an assistant to rock the unit in different directions and observe the behavior of the bearings. Play present in new components leads to rapid wear of the bearings. Replace defective components.

Replacement

Before removing components, mark their installation positions with paint.

Right support

1. Where required, remove the air cleaner (see Chapter Power and exhaust systems).

2. To unload the support, support the engine with a trolley jack; to distribute the load, place a wooden block between the jack head and the oil pan.

3. Unscrew the three bolts securing the right support to the block support bracket.



4. Unscrew the bolts securing the support to the body and remove the bracket together with the cushion.



5. If necessary, the support can be disassembled by unscrewing a single bolt threaded through the central part of the cushion.

6. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Make sure that all fasteners are tightened to the required force.

Front support

1. Set the parking brake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and support it.



2. To unload the support, support the engine with a trolley jack; to distribute the load, place a wooden block between the jack head and the oil pan.

When jacking up the power unit, be careful not to put any load on the exhaust system; if necessary, disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold (see Chapter Power and Exhaust Systems).

3. Loosen the nut that secures the support to the bracket and remove it together with the washer. Remove the mounting bolt.



4. Unscrew the bolts securing the support bracket to the transmission housing and remove it together with the cushion.

5. Check the condition of all support components. Replace worn or damaged parts.



6. Replace the support bracket and tighten its mounting bolts to the required torque.

7. With the support properly oriented, install it onto the subframe, then lower the unit. Install the bolts, then tighten the new mounting nuts to the required torque.

8. Lower the car to the ground.

Rear support

1. Set the parking brake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and support it.

2. To unload the support, support the transmission with a trolley jack; to distribute the load, place a wooden block between the jack head and the transmission pan.

3. Unscrew the two bolts securing the rear support to the subframe and loosen the nut securing the support to the transmission bracket. Remove the support and remove it from under the car together with the bracket.



4. When installing, place the support in place and install the bolts and nuts that secure it to the subframe. Align the support with the transmission bracket and tighten the support mounting nut. Tighten the fasteners to the required torque. Remove the jack.

5. Lower the vehicle to the ground.

Left support

1. Set the parking brake, jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on supports. If equipped, remove the crankcase guard.



2. Remove the battery (see Chapter Engine electrical equipment).

3. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the battery support tray (see Chapter Engine electrical equipment).

4. Support the transmission with a trolley jack, placing a wooden block between the jack head and the pan to distribute the load.

5. Remove six (manual transmission)/five (automatic transmission) mounting bolts and remove the transmission mounting support bracket from the transmission.



6. Remove the four TORX-head mounting bolts and remove the support, separating it from the body.



7. If necessary, the support can be disassembled by unscrewing a single bolt threaded through the center of the cushion.



8. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Make sure that all fasteners are tightened to the required force.
