Replacing the camshaft seal (Opel Astra G)

1. Remove the camshaft timing gear (see Removal and installation the timing belt tensioner and timing drive gears).

2. Carefully punch or drill a couple of small holes in the hard end surface of the seal, into which screw two screws. Grasping the heads of the screws with pliers, remove the seal from its seat.



3. Clean the walls of the oil seal seat, removing small nicks and roughness that could cause the new oil seal to fail.

4. Lubricate the sealing lips of the new oil seal with clean engine oil and, using a cylindrical drift, press and press the oil seal into the seat flush with the surface of the head (with lips inward), - rest the mandrel against the hard outer edge of the end surface of the seal, try not to damage the working edges.

A replaceable socket head of a suitable size or a section of pipe of a suitable diameter can be used as a mandrel.

5. Install the camshaft gear (see Removal and installation the timing belt tensioner and timing drive gears).
