Removal and installation the timing belt cover (Opel Astra G)

Removal

Upper section

1. Remove the air cleaner (see Chapter Power and exhaust systems).

2. Remove the mounting screws and remove the upper section of the timing belt cover.

Bottom section

1. Remove the top section of the lid (see above).

2. Remove the crankshaft pulley (see Removal and installation the crankshaft pulley).

3. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly (see Chapter Engine electrical equipment).

4. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the lower section of the cover from the engine.

Back cover

1. Remove the timing belt, its tensioner and timing drive gears (see Removal and installation the timing belt and Removal and installation the timing belt tensioner and timing drive gears).



2. Support the engine with a trolley jack; to distribute the load, place a wooden block between the jack head and the pan.

3. Mark the installation position of the right support of the power unit suspension, then unscrew the three bolts securing it to the engine block. Loosen the bolts securing the support unit to the body element and remove the support assembly with the bracket.

4. Release the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) wiring harness from the clips on the cover - try to remember the route of the harness.

5. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the rear cover from the engine.

Installation

Installation is performed in the reverse order of component removal. Ensure that the CKP sensor wiring harness is correctly routed and securely fastened. When installing the crankshaft pulley, do not forget to replace its mounting bolt. Tighten all fasteners to the required torque.
