Raise the rear of the car.
Remove the plastic plug on the inside of each rear wheel.
Shine a flashlight into the inspection hole, determine the thickness of the block.
The maximum allowable thickness of the overlays riveted to the pads is 3 mm. Accordingly, the protruding part above the riveting head is 0.5 mm. In this case, replace the pads.
The thickness of the new pads is 5 mm.
Removing the brake drum
Raise the rear of the car and remove the wheel.
Unscrew the fixing bolt of the brake drum.
If the drum cannot be removed manually, put back the adjusting eccentric.
Remove the plug on the back of the brake shield and use a screwdriver to press the hand brake lever through the hole, while the return spring is pulled.
If required, loosen the adjusting nut on the handbrake lever.
Left: to facilitate the dismantling of the brake drum, on the back of the brake shield, press with a screwdriver through the hole on the hand brake lever, while the return spring is pulled.
On right: checking lining thickness on rear drum brakes: Each brake shield has a viewing hole through which you can look at the brake linings.
Left: the arrow shows the fixing bolt that secures the brake drum to the wheel hub.
On right: when the brake drum is removed, then on the rear wheel brake we see the following nodes:
1 - clamping springs;
2 - running block (primary block);
3 - wheel brake cylinder;
4 - adjusting mounting spring;
5 - wrung out block (secondary block);
6 - hand brake control lever;
7 - lower return spring;
8 - upper return spring.
Loosen the firmly seated drum on the centering belt of the wheel hub with a plastic mallet.
Before installing the drum, lubricate the rear wheel hub belt with a thin layer of grease for rolling bearings.
If necessary, adjust the handbrake.
Checking the condition of the brake drums
The friction surface of the brake drum should be as smooth as possible.
If there are grooves or deep burrs (due to pads worn down to rivets), then the drum can be bored.
The new brake drums have an inner diameter of 231 mm.
After boring, its inner diameter should be no more than 231.0 mm. otherwise both brake drums must be replaced.
Oversized pads are used with bored drums: 5.6 mm.
Removing the wheel brake cylinder drum brake
Remove the brake drum.
Unhook the upper return spring of the brake pads and press the pads outward.
Unscrew the brake pipe. If a new brake cylinder is not installed immediately after this, then you must press the brake pedal and fix it (see «work advice» in this chapter) in order to avoid unnecessary loss of brake fluid.
Unscrew the brake cylinder from the brake shield.
Before mounting, turn back the adjusting eccentric. After assembling the brake shoe, adjust, see next section.
Tightening torques: brake cylinder on the brake shield - 9 Nm, brake pipe on the brake cylinder - 16 Nm.
Bleed the brake system.
Removing the brake pads
Remove the brake drum.
With both hands, press the brake pads towards the front of the vehicle so that the adjusting retaining spring does not damage the wheel cylinder collar when removed.
Unhook the adjusting fixing spring at the top with pliers and remove together with the top return spring.
Also remove the spring and adjusting lever.
Remove the mounting pressure springs. To do this, press the spring plate with pliers and turn it 90°. At the same time, press the fixing pins on the rear of the brake shield by hand so that they do not rotate too.
Remove the brake pads from the wheel brake cylinder.
Unhook the handbrake cable.
Before installation, clean the brake anchor plate with a soft metal brush and grease the adjacent surfaces with an anti-squeak paste.
When installing, please note: the adjusting devices have right-hand and left-hand threads Do not confuse the mounting side.
Check the free play of the gear and adjusting lever; clean if necessary.
Turn back the gear until it stops.
Lightly lubricate the push rod threads.
Mount the brake pads. When installing, first attach the lower side of the adjusting retaining spring. Hang the top return spring onto the adjusting retaining spring with tongs. Now hang the adjusting retaining spring as described above.
Mount the brake drum.
After installation, depress the brake pedal until both rear wheels stop audible jumping of the adjusting lever on the gear (you need help for this).
If necessary, adjust the handbrake.
When dismantling the brake pads, the adjusting retaining spring must be removed. To do this, press the gas wrench into the wheel hub. When removing the spring, make sure (so that the cuff of the wheel brake cylinder is not damaged).
