Replacing the brake shoes of the rear wheel drum brakes (Opel Kadett E)

Warning: Replace the brake pads simultaneously on both brake mechanisms, i.e. both pairs of pads.


Removal



Remove the brake drum.

Disconnect the upper tension spring from the brake shoes using brake pliers.

Remove the release lever with the spring.

Using a screwdriver, remove the upper tension spring tab.

Remove the spacer bar with the tension spring.

Remove the brake shoe pressure springs.

Disconnect the lower tension spring from the pads.

Disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever.

Remove worn brake pads.

Installation



Connect the cable to the parking brake lever.

Install new brake pads.

Install the brake shoe pressure springs.

Attach the lower tension spring to the pads.

Turn the ratchet for automatic adjustment of the clearance between the brake shoes and the drum until it stops.

Install the spacer bar.

Attach the release lever tension spring to the brake shoe.

Install the upper tension spring tab.

Attach the upper tension spring to the pads.

Install the brake drum and adjust the clearance between the brake shoes and the drum by pressing the brake pedal at least ten times, each time you press it you should hear a click. Once the clicking stops, the correct clearance has been set.

Adjust the parking brake actuator as follows.
