Warning. Replace the brake pads simultaneously on both brake mechanisms, i.e. both pairs of pads.
Removing
Remove brake drum.
Disconnect the upper return spring from the brake shoes with brake pliers.
Remove release lever with spring.
Using a screwdriver, remove the tab of the upper return spring.
Remove spacer bar with tension spring.
Remove the pad retainer springs.
Disconnect the lower return spring from the shoes.
Disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever.
Remove worn brake pads.
Installation
Connect the cable to the parking brake lever.
Install new brake pads.
Install the pad retainer springs.
Attach the lower return spring to the shoes.
Turn the ratchet for automatic clearance adjustment between the brake pads and the drum as far as it will go.
Install spacer bar.
Attach the release lever return spring to the brake shoe.
Install the upper return spring tab.
Attach the upper return spring to the shoes.
Install the brake drum and adjust the clearance between the brake shoes and the drum by depressing the brake pedal at least ten times, a click should be heard with each press. As soon as the clicks stop, it means that the correct gap is set.
Adjust the parking brake actuator as shown below.
