Maintenance work
If the parking brake is applied vigorously each time you park, the brake cables will lengthen over time. But, on the other hand, someone who rarely uses the handbrake may one day be surprised to find that it only pulls on one side - a flaw often found in TUV inspections. That's why:
Carry out a function test as described below.
The action of the handbrake should begin with the second tooth of the lever.
When entering the groove of the seventh tooth, the rear wheels must be locked.
If the lever path is longer, then this indicates worn rear brake drum linings or stretched handbrake cables
If the handbrake is extended more than 6 teeth, it must be adjusted.
«Running in» hand brake
In cars with disc brakes at the rear, the handbrake pads practically do not wear out, because. it is usually tightened when the car is stationary. Those. there is almost never the usual friction between pads and drums. As a result, the coefficient of friction of the handbrake pads may change. The parking brake loses its effectiveness. Remedy: Drive the vehicle with the handbrake lightly applied for about 300 m.
Dismantled drum brake pads. Visible:
1 - running block (primary block);
2 and 5 - spring plates, clamping spring, mounting pin;
3 - adjusting and fixing spring;
4 - upper return spring;
6 - wrung out block (secondary block);
7 - lower return spring;
8 - spring of the adjusting lever;
9 - adjusting lever;
10 - pressure rod with an adjusting gear and a thermal clamp;
11 - hand brake control lever.
«Running in» should also occur if new handbrake pads have been fitted, if the handbrake needs to be repaired/repaired, or if you experience a reduction in the effectiveness of the handbrake.
From time to time, you must brake your car in the last meters of traffic until it comes to a complete stop with the handbrake. So the friction surfaces of the drum and brake pads of the hand brake will remain in working condition and will not rust. Make sure that no other vehicle is following you. when applying the handbrake, the brake lights do not come on.
Handbrake adjustment
Conditions: before adjusting the handbrake, you need to make sure that the brake cables move easily, otherwise the adjustment will not be of any use. You must also pre-adjust the brake pads of the handbrake - only after that you can adjust the tension of the cables (if it's even needed).
Hand brake pad adjustment (in vehicles with rear disc brakes): Place the handbrake lever on the second cog.
Raise the rear of the car.
Remove rear wheels.
There is a hole between the wheel bolt holes. Rotate the brake disc so that the hole is at the bottom.
Exactly in this place is the adjusting gear of the handbrake pads. To check, shine a flashlight into the bolt hole.
Insert a screwdriver into the hole and turn the adjusting gear with forcing movements so that the brake pads fit and the brake disc cannot rotate. When adjusting, the wringing movements with a screwdriver are made downwards.
Turn the adjusting gear back until the wheel can turn freely
Adjusting the brake cables (for all models):
Raise the rear of the car, both wheels should hang freely.
In the car, pull the handbrake lever to the seventh tooth.
In this position, both rear wheels must be locked.
If not, release the handbrake. Squeeze the artificial leather bolster on the handbrake lever lightly and remove from the center console clips.
Adjust the nut on the handbrake lever accordingly.
Apply the handbrake.
Check the handbrake again.
