Maintenance work
In cars with rear disc brakes, the handbrake pads - except for lapping - are not subject to wear at all. they only operate when the vehicle is stationary. Checking for poor or one-sided braking effect is more about checking the outer surface of the pad and the friction surface of the brake drum.
Remove the brake caliper and brake disc for inspection (described in the book above).
lining thickness (without brake pad) must be at least 1.5 mm.
The surface of the lining must be smooth, but not «glazed», i.e. hardened, which can occur if you drive for a long time with the handbrake pulled.
Test: Scratch the friction surface with a screwdriver. If the lining material «breaks off», replace the pads.
Using this opportunity, check whether the ease of movement of the expansion lock and the brake cable lever to which the cables are attached is still preserved.
Finally, check the friction surface of the small brake drum: light rust can be removed by lapping. Deep pitting or burn-in marks require a new brake disc (Opel does not give the size for fine-tuning).
Replacing the handbrake cable
Squeeze the handbrake leatherette bolster lightly and remove from the clips on the center console.
Unscrew the adjusting nut located under it.
Raise and secure the vehicle.
Unscrew the exhaust system at the catalytic converter.
Unhook the rubber suspension of the exhaust system and lower the system.
Unscrew the heat shield on the bottom of the car and remove it.
Unhook the handbrake cable from the cable rocker.
Take out a cable of a manual brake from guides at the left and on the right and wring out from clamps located under them. If necessary, slightly bend the latches.
On the rear wheels, bend the safety brackets and remove the handbrake cable from the guides.
Insert a new cable from both sides into the guides and attach to the rocker arm of the handbrake cables, if necessary, squeeze the clamps.
Install the handbrake cable with new safety brackets.
Reinstall the heat shield and exhaust system.
After installation, adjust the handbrake.
After adjustment, clip the artificial leather bead to the hand cable arm in the center console.
After dismantling the artificial leather roller, a nut becomes accessible, with which the handbrake cables can be adjusted accordingly.
