Maintenance work
In cars with rear disc brakes, the handbrake pads - except for grinding - are not subject to wear at all, since they are only activated when the car is stationary. Checking for poor or one-sided braking effect consists more of checking the outer surface of the pad and the friction surface of the brake drum.
To perform the inspection, remove the brake caliper and brake disc (described in the book above).
Thickness of the overlay (without brake pad) must be at least 1.5 mm.
The surface of the pad should be smooth, but not "glassy", i.e. hardened, which can happen if you drive for a long time with the handbrake pulled.
Test: Scrape the friction surface with a screwdriver. If the pad material "chips off", replace the pads.
Using this opportunity, check whether the expansion joint and the brake cable lever to which the cables are attached still move freely.
Finally, check the friction surface of the small brake drum: light rust deposits can be removed by grinding. Deep pits or grinding marks require a new brake disc (Opel does not provide dimensions for finishing).
Replacing the handbrake cable
Gently squeeze the leatherette handbrake roller and remove it from the clips on the center console.

Unscrew the adjusting nut located underneath.
Raise and secure the vehicle.
Unscrew the exhaust system at the catalytic converter.
Unhook the rubber exhaust system hanger and lower the system.
Unscrew the heat shield on the bottom of the car and remove it.
Unhook the handbrake cable at the cable rocker arm.
Remove the handbrake cable from the guides on the left and right and press it out of the clamps located underneath. If necessary, bend the clamps slightly.
On the rear wheels, bend back the safety brackets and remove the handbrake cable from the guides.
Insert the new cable into the guides on both sides and attach it to the handbrake cable rocker arm; if necessary, squeeze the clamps.
Install the handbrake cable with new safety clips.
Reinstall the heat shield and exhaust system.
After installation, adjust the handbrake.
After adjustment, secure the leatherette roller to the hand cable lever in the center console with clamps.
After removing the artificial leather roller, a nut becomes accessible, which can be used to adjust the handbrake cables accordingly.
