When you apply the handbrake, the brake cables are pulled towards the rear wheels.
As a result of this, the brake lever of the secondary shoe located at the rear in the direction of travel is pulled in the drum, and then both brake shoes are pressed against the brake drum by means of a connecting rod; the rear wheel is locked.
As already mentioned, models with a 16V engine have disc brakes at the rear. Here the hand brake system is completely separated from the foot brake. Small brake drums are mounted inside the brake discs, on the pads of which the hand brake acts.
