When you pull the handbrake, the brake cables are pulled toward the rear wheels.
As a result, the brake lever of the secondary shoe located at the rear in the direction of travel is pulled in the drum, and then both brake shoes are pressed against the brake drum by means of a connecting rod; the rear wheel is locked.
As already mentioned, models with a 16V engine have disc brakes at the rear. Here, the handbrake system is completely separated from the foot brake. Small brake drums are mounted inside the brake discs, on the pads of which the handbrake acts.
