Warning! When the brake pistons are sunk into the cylinders, the level of brake fluid in the reservoir will increase, so pump some of the brake fluid out of the reservoir. After replacing the brake pads, check and, if necessary, top up the brake fluid level (see «Checking the levels of technical fluids»).
If the brake pads are worn on only one side, the pads on both sides of the vehicle must be replaced.
Recommendation. When replacing brake pads, be sure to check the wear and condition of the brake drum (see «Rear drum brakes - check»).
Execution sequence
1. We prepare the car for work (eat. «Preparing the car for maintenance and repair»).
2. Remove the reservoir cap of the main brake cylinder and pump out some of the liquid with a rubber bulb.
3. Remove the brake drum (see «Rear brake drums - replacement»).
4. Use pliers to remove the upper coupling spring.
5. Remove the bracket of the upper coupling spring.
6. Remove the pawl with the spring of the automatic adjustment device.
7. Use pliers to remove the lower coupling spring.
8. Holding the support stand on the reverse side, press the cup with pliers and turn the stand by 90°. Remove the cup and the support strut spring.
9. Remove the support strut and remove the front brake pad.
10. Remove the spacer bar.
11. Remove the support strut of the rear brake pad and remove the pad.
12. We depress the spring of the parking brake cable, disengage the cable from the shoe lever and remove the brake shoe.
13. We carefully examine the details of the brake mechanism. Damaged parts must be replaced.
14. We clean the shield of the brake mechanism.
15. We apply a special high-temperature grease to the contact points of the brake pads with the brake shield.
16. We install the parts in the reverse order.
17. Before installing the spacer bar, we wrap the threaded part so that the bar has a minimum length.
18. After installation, check the level of brake fluid (see «Checking the levels of technical fluids») and bring the brake pads to the drums with a few presses of the brake pedal.
