Rear drum brakes — check (Opel Zafira A)

The degree of wear of the rear brake shoes and brake drums must be checked every 15 thousand km or every year of operation, whichever comes first.

Sequence of execution

1. Prepare the vehicle for work (see "Preparing the car for maintenance and repair").

2. Remove the rear wheel (see "Wheel - replacement").

3. To check the thickness of the brake shoe lining, remove the plug from the brake shield.



4. Through the inspection hole in the shield, visually determine the thickness of the brake shoe lining.

If the brake shoe lining thickness is less than the permissible value (see "Reference data"), we replace all the brake pads of the left and right brake mechanisms (see "Rear brake pads - replacement").



5. Install the brake shield plug.

Note: This method does not allow you to assess the wear of the second brake pad (which may differ if there is a malfunction in the wheel brake cylinder), brake drum wear and wheel brake cylinder serviceability. Therefore, it is better to remove the brake drum and conduct a full check.

6. Remove the brake drum (see "Rear brake drums - replacement").

7. Measure the diameter of the brake drum if it is larger than the permissible value (see "Reference data"), we replace the drums on both sides of the car (see "Rear brake drums - replacement").



8. Determine the thickness of the brake shoe linings if it is less than the permissible value (see "Reference data"), we replace all four brake pads of the left and right brake mechanisms (see "Rear brake pads - replacement").



9. Check for any brake fluid leaks at the wheel brake cylinder cuffs.





10. Check the correct installation of the spring of the automatic clearance adjustment device in the rear brake mechanism.



11. Slightly move the pawl of the adjusting device and check the ease of rotation of the adjusting gear.



If the gear does not turn, it is necessary to remove the spacer bar (see "Rear brake pads - replacement") and repair or replace it.



12. Make sure there are no traces of oil or other technical fluids on the brake drum and pads. If necessary, degrease them, for example, using a brake cleaner.

13. Assemble the brake mechanism and install the wheel.

14. We check the brake mechanism of the second wheel in the same way.
