Warning! Even if there are no visible malfunctions in the operation of the brake system, it is necessary to check the brake system at each maintenance. Do not neglect this, an unexpected failure of the service brake system can be very costly!
Possible typical malfunctions of the brake system can be divided into several types. Depending on the type of malfunction, the verification algorithm and the range of nodes to be checked differ.
1. Brake fluid leak. The brake fluid level in the GTZ reservoir is constantly decreasing. The malfunction is likely to be accompanied by increased brake pedal travel. Possible reasons:
- 1) front brake caliper failure (see «Front brake mechanisms - check»);
- 2) rear brake caliper failure (see «Rear disc brakes - check») or rear brake wheel cylinder (see «Rear drum brakes - check»);
- 3) damage to the brake hose of one of the wheels (see «The drive of the service brake system - check»);
- 4) brake pipe damage (see «The drive of the service brake system - check»).
2. Increased brake pedal travel. Possible reasons:
- 1) brake fluid leak (see above);
- 2) malfunction of the device for automatic clearance adjustment in the rear brake mechanism (see «Rear drum brakes - check»);
- 3) faulty vacuum brake booster (see «Vacuum brake booster - check»);
- 4) defective brake master cylinder (see «Brake master cylinder - replacement»).
3. Increased effort on the brake pedal. Possible reasons:
- 1) vacuum booster malfunction (see «Vacuum brake booster - check»);
- 2) oiling of brake pads and surfaces of brake discs or drums of one axle (see c. 223, «Front brake mechanisms - check», «Rear disc brakes - check» or «Rear drum brakes - check»).
4. Uneven brake response (car pulling away from a straight line or skidding when braking). Possible reasons:
- 1) jamming of the front or rear brake caliper or rear wheel cylinder (see «Front brake mechanisms - check», «Rear disc brakes - check» or «Rear drum brakes - check»);
- 2) oiling of brake pads and surfaces of brake discs or drums of one axle (see «Front brake mechanisms - check» And «Rear disc brakes - check» or «Rear drum brakes - check»);
- 3) kinked brake pipe (see «The drive of the service brake system - check»).
5. Severe squeaking or grinding when braking, most likely caused by the wear limit of the brake pads of the front or rear brake mechanisms (see «Front brake mechanisms - check», «Rear disc brakes - check» or «Rear drum brakes - check»).
