Checking the free play of the brake pedal
Free play of the brake pedal is the stroke of the pedal from its upper position to the start of the brakes. It should be 3-5 mm.
We install a ruler or tape measure near the pedal and measure the distance from the floor to the outer surface of the brake pedal. Pressing the pedal with your hand, we lower it down until we feel an increase in resistance to the movement of the pedal and repeat the measurement. By the difference between the obtained values, we determine the free play of the pedal. To improve the measurement accuracy, the operation is repeated several times.
Checking the vacuum brake booster
1. With the engine off, press the brake pedal several times until the hissing in the brake booster stops.
2. Press the brake pedal and hold it down.
3. Without releasing the pedal, we start the engine.
4. If immediately after starting the engine the pedal went down a little, then the brake booster is working.
Otherwise, we check the integrity of the vacuum supply hose to the vacuum booster, the tightness of its connection to the inlet pipeline and the vacuum booster.
If the hose is in good condition and is tightly connected, then the vacuum booster is faulty, it must be replaced (see «Vacuum brake booster - replacement»).
Checking the brake lines
To complete the work, you will need to look at a ditch or overpass.
1. Carefully inspect the pipelines of the brake system for cracks, leaks of brake fluid and dents. Defective items must be replaced (see «Brake pipes - replacement»).
2. Squeezing a little, inspect the brake hoses for fatigue cracks, scuffs, blisters and leaks of brake fluid. Faulty, elements need to be replaced (see «Brake hoses - replacement»).
