Comment. On Astra and Zafira vehicles, depending on the configuration and year of manufacture, brake mechanisms of different manufacturers may be installed, which may have minor external differences. In this regard, there are differences in the operation (indicated in the text).
Execution sequence
1. We prepare the car for the implementation of the frame (see «Preparing the car for maintenance and repair»).
Warning! When the brake pistons are sunk into the cylinders, the level of brake fluid in the reservoir will increase, so pump some of the brake fluid out of the reservoir. After replacing the brake pads, check and, if necessary, top up the brake fluid level (see «Checking the levels of technical fluids»).
2. Remove the reservoir cap of the main brake cylinder and pump out some of the liquid with a rubber bulb.
3. Remove the wheel (see «Wheel - replacement»).
4. Using a screwdriver as a lever, we sink the piston into the brake cylinder.
5. Remove the protective caps from the holes of the caliper guide bushings.
6. Using a 7 mm hex wrench, unscrew the two caliper mounting bolts.
7. Using a screwdriver, we bend the fixing spring of the pad, disengaging it from the guide of the pads.
8. Without disconnecting the brake hose, remove the caliper with pads from the steering knuckle.
9. We fix the caliper so as not to subject the brake hose to stress.
10. Remove the inner brake shoe with a spring holder.
11. Remove the outer brake shoe with a retaining spring.
Comment. If the caliper is of a different design, remove the outer pad from the guide.
Recommendation. When replacing brake pads, be sure to check the thickness and condition of the brake disc (see «Front brake mechanisms - check»).
12. We clean the guide pads of the caliper.
13. We clean the edge of the brake disc and the landing surfaces of the steering knuckle. We apply a special high-temperature grease to the contact points of the guide pads with the landing surfaces of the steering knuckle.
14. We clean the caliper mounting bolts from dirt and dust, they should move freely along the caliper guide bushings.
15. Install the brake pads in reverse order.
16. Similarly, we replace the brake pads on the other side of the car.
17. Press the brake pedal several times to self-adjust the gaps between the brake pads and discs.
18. We check the level of brake fluid in the reservoir of the main brake cylinder and, if necessary, bring it to normal (see «Checking the level of technical fluids»).
