Front brake pads — replacement (Opel Zafira A)

The necessity of performing this operation should be determined during the process of checking the technical condition of the brake system (see "Brake system - checking technical condition").

Note. Depending on the configuration and year of manufacture, Astra and Zafira vehicles may be equipped with brake mechanisms from different manufacturers, which may have minor external differences. In this regard, there are differences in the operation (indicated in the text).

Sequence of execution

1. Prepare the car for frame construction (see "Preparing the car for maintenance and repair").

Warning! When the brake pistons are pressed into the cylinders, the brake fluid level in the reservoir will increase, so pump out some of the brake fluid from the reservoir. After replacing the brake pads, check the brake fluid level and, if necessary, bring it up to normal (see "Checking the levels of technical fluids").

2. Remove the cover of the main brake cylinder reservoir and use a rubber bulb to pump out some of the fluid.

3. Remove the wheel (see "Wheel - replacement").

4. Using a screwdriver as a lever, push the piston into the brake cylinder.



5. Remove the protective caps from the holes in the caliper guide bushings.





6. Using a 7 mm Allen key, unscrew the two caliper mounting bolts.



7. Using a screwdriver, bend back the locking spring of the shoe, removing it from engagement with the shoe guide.



8. Without disconnecting the brake hose, remove the caliper with pads from the steering knuckle.



9. Fix the caliper so as not to put stress on the brake hose.



10. Remove the inner brake shoe with the spring holder.



11. Remove the outer brake shoe with the retaining spring.

Note: If the caliper is of a different design, remove the outer shoe from the guide.

Recommendation: When replacing brake pads, be sure to check the thickness and condition of the brake disc (see "Front brakes - check").

12. Clean the caliper pad guides.



13. Clean the edge of the brake disc and the seating surfaces of the steering knuckle. Apply special high-temperature grease to the contact points of the guide pads with the seating surfaces of the steering knuckle.



14. Clean the caliper mounting bolts from dirt and dust; they should move freely along the caliper guide bushings.



15. Install the brake pads in the reverse order.

16. Similarly, we replace the brake pads on the other side of the car.

17. Press the brake pedal several times to automatically adjust the gaps between the brake pads and discs.

18. Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir and, if necessary, top it up to normal (see "Checking the level of technical fluids").
