Maintenance work
The piston pushes the brake pad that is being worn out so far that it is only a fraction of a millimetre away from the brake disc. Therefore, the free travel of the brake pedal is not a guide for determining the wear of the front brake pads. Even in cars with a brake pad thickness control system, you should not forget about an additional visual check, and not only in cases when you are going on holiday.
The minimum thickness of the overlay, including the carrier plate, is 8 mm. The carrier plate itself, i.e. the metal part to which the overlay is glued, is about 5 mm thick.
The check is carried out with the wheel removed.
Place a ruler on the pad and measure as shown in the photo on the next page. To check the outer pad, use a large screwdriver to pry the brake caliper outward.
