All models manufactured after 1984 are equipped with self-adjusting rear brakes. There are slight differences between the brakes installed on station wagon models and other models, but the operating principles are the same.
The fixed spacer installed between the manually adjustable brake shoes is replaced by an adjustable spacer consisting of a threaded rod, an adjusting gear and a half spacer. When the clearance between the shoe and the drum exceeds a certain value, the spring adjusting lever moves the pinion forward when the brakes are applied and the length of the spacer increases.
All models except the station wagon type have a built-in thermal ring in the adjustable spacer. This ring expands as the brake drum heats up while it is in operation, thus preventing incorrect adjustment and subsequent locking when the brake drum begins to cool.
