1. Raise the rear of the vehicle and remove the road wheel and brake drum.
2. Remove the brake shoes as indicated in Sections 9 or 11.
3. Using a screwdriver, remove the locking plate that secures the handbrake cable to the plastic sleeve in the rear plate.
4. Remove the hub dust cap.
5. Remove the kingpin and unscrew and remove the gear nut and pusher washer.
6. Remove the hub from the axle shaft.
7. Disconnect the tube from the cylinder by unscrewing the coupling. Cap the end of the tube to prevent fluid loss.
8. Unscrew and remove the cylinder.
9. Unscrew the rear plate mounting bolts and remove the plate from the short axle.
10. Assembly is carried out in reverse order, but pay attention to the following.
11. Since the rear brake plate bolts secure the short axle to the rear axle flange, new bolts must be used. For clarification of safety precautions and tightening procedures, please contact Chapter 10, Section 16.
12. Adjust the hub bearings as indicated in Chapter 10.
13. Adjust brake shoes where necessary (Section 8).
14. Bleed the hydraulic system (Section 20).
