Examination
1. Apply the handbrake, raise the front of the vehicle and remove the right front wheel.
2. Remove the cylinder head cover.
3. Turn the crankshaft by the crankshaft pulley bolt clockwise until the alignment mark on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the pointer on the oil pump housing. To facilitate turning the crankshaft, unscrew the fuel injectors.
4. Check that the lobes of the first camshaft cylinder are pointing up. If the cams are pointing down, turn the crankshaft one full turn.
5. Draw a diagram of the engine and number the cylinders from 1 to 4. Cylinder N1 is located on the side of the toothed belt. Note the position of each valve along with the valve clearance. When checking valve clearances, the cam of the valve being checked should point upwards.
6. If all clearances are within the specified limits, install the cylinder head cover, install the wheel and lower the vehicle. If the actual clearance is not correct, adjustment must be made.
Adjustment
1. Rotate the crankshaft pulley until the cam of the valve to be adjusted points up.
2. Rotate the tappet cup so that the groove on the top edge of the tappet is not facing the front of the engine.
3. Place a screwdriver blade between the edge of the pusher cup and the base of the camshaft and move the pusher cup down just enough to remove the gasket from the pusher cup.
4. Clean the shim and measure its thickness with a micrometer.
5. Add the measured valve clearance to the thickness of the original shim, and then subtract the required valve clearance from the resulting number. This will give you the thickness of the new required shim.
For example
Measured valve clearance is 0.35 mm.
Plus the thickness of the original shim is 2.7mm.
Equal to 3.05 mm.
Minus the required clearance of 0.25 mm.
The required gasket thickness is 2.8 mm.
6. Take a shim of the required thickness, lubricate it with clean engine oil and insert it into the tappet cup so that the shim thickness marking points down.
7. Adjust the valve clearances on the other valves in the same way.
8. Turn the engine crankshaft several times and re-measure the valve clearances.
9. Install the cylinder head cover, install the wheel and lower the vehicle.
