Checking and adjusting valve clearances (Opel Vectra B)

Checking the valve clearances is necessary after the valves start knocking, after a major overhaul of the engine, or when the engine power decreases. Check and adjust on a cold engine.

Examination



1. Apply the handbrake, raise the front of the car and remove the right front wheel.

2. Remove the cylinder head cover.

3. Turn the crankshaft clockwise using the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt until the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the pointer on the oil pump housing. To make turning the crankshaft easier, unscrew the fuel injectors.

4. Check that the camshaft lobes of the first cylinder are pointing up. If the lobes are pointing down, rotate the crankshaft one full revolution.

5. Draw a diagram of the engine and number the cylinders from 1 to 4. Cylinder N1 is on the toothed belt side. Mark the position of each valve along with the valve clearance. When checking the valve clearances, the cam of the valve being checked should point upwards.

6. If all clearances are within the required limits, install the cylinder head cover, install the wheel and lower the car. If the actual clearance is not within the specified limits, adjustment must be made.

Adjustment



1. Rotate the crankshaft pulley until the valve cam that needs to be adjusted points upward.

2. Rotate the tappet cup so that the groove on the top edge of the tappet is not facing the front of the engine.

3. Place the blade of a screwdriver between the edge of the tappet cup and the base of the camshaft and move the tappet cup down just enough to remove the gasket from the tappet cup.

4. Clean the adjusting shim and measure its thickness with a micrometer.

5. Add the measured valve clearance to the original shim thickness, then subtract the required valve clearance from that number. This will give you the thickness of the new shim required.

For example



Measured valve clearance 0.35 mm.

Plus the thickness of the initial adjustment shim is 2.7 mm.

Equals 3.05 mm.

Minus the required gap of 0.25 mm.

The required gasket thickness is 2.8 mm.

6. Take the adjusting shim of the required thickness, lubricate it with clean engine oil and insert it into the tappet cup so that the adjusting shim thickness marking is facing down.

7. Adjust the valve clearances on the remaining valves in the same manner.

8. Turn the engine crankshaft several times and re-measure the valve clearances.

9. Install the cylinder head cover, install the wheel and lower the vehicle.
