Removing
Attention! It is imperative to replace all the brake pads on the same axle at the same time, even if only one of them is oily or worn.
Remove brake drum.
Attention! Before removing the brake pads, it is recommended to mark the position of the return springs, expansion bar and setting device. This makes it easier to assemble the brakes.
Unhook the upper return spring using special pliers, such as Hazet 897. This can be done with another suitable tool.
Remove the recoil spring holder with a screwdriver from the hole in the block.
Remove the setting lever from the brake shoe and release the lever return spring.
Slightly open the brake pads and remove the adjusting mechanism with the parking brake lever expansion bar and the pad.
Remove the front brake shoe retaining pin. To do this, press the spring plate with pliers and turn it 90°while holding the pin from behind. Remove the plate and spring, pull out the retaining pin. In workshops, the Opel KM-346 tool is used to compress the spring, but this can also be done with pliers.
Remove the rear brake pad retaining pin in the same way.
Disconnect the lower return spring.
Remove the brake pads by disconnecting the cable from the parking brake lever.
Installation
Be sure to replace all four brake pads. It is recommended to use only genuine Opel brake pads. Wash the brake drum and brake shield with alcohol. With the pads removed, do not press the brake pedal; otherwise the brake pistons will come out of the wheel brake cylinders. If the cylinder is covered with brake fluid, it must be replaced. Clean and lightly oil the threads of the expansion bar.
Lubricate the supports in the area of contact of the brake pads with a special paste, for example Opel 1942586 (90166282).
Check the ease of movement of the gearing. If necessary, disassemble and clean the setting mechanism.
Lubricate the threads of the setting mechanism with silicone grease, e.g. Opel 1970206 (90167353). Turn the adjusting gear all the way back.
Attention! The left and right rails have a left and right thread, respectively, and are marked with letters "L" And "R", to avoid assembly confusion. In addition, the setting gear, setting lever and recoil spring holder are marked with paint: the left side parts are black, and the right side parts are silver.
Connect the brake shoe lever to the parking brake lever. Pay attention to the correct laying of the parking brake cable.
Install the bottom spring.
Install the block on the brake shield. To do this, insert the pin from behind and install the spring. Compress the spring, then turn its plate 90°, thereby securing it. Hold the pin at the back at the same time.
Install the setting mechanism from above between the brake pads, paying attention to correct installation (see arrow in fig.).
Attention! When installing new pads, do not forget to install the spring plate of the setting lever.
Install the setting lever with the spring onto the pin.
Hook the end of the return spring of the setting lever with pliers to the brake shoe.
Insert the holder of the upper return spring into the pin and press into the hole in the brake shoe.
Hook the upper return spring of the brake shoe to the holder.
Move the setting mechanism back to the stop. When doing this, make sure that the gear wheel does not block at the stop.
Install the brake drum.
