Removal

Remove the oil pan (see the relevant chapter).

Disconnect the oil pick-up pipe (1) from the oil pump and balance shaft block.

Disconnect the oil pick-up pipe (1) from the oil pump and balance shaft block.

Remove the balance shaft assembly (2) from the cylinder block and crankshaft bearing caps.

Adjustment

Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to TDC in the compression stroke.

Turn the balance shafts so that the two points (arrows) are parallel to each other.

Turn the balance shafts so that the two points (arrows) are parallel to each other.

If the crankshaft, crankshaft bearing caps or balance shaft assembly has been replaced, adjust the clearance between the crankshaft and balance shafts (see the relevant chapter).

If work has been performed that has not affected the clearance between the crankshaft and balance shafts (for example, to replace connecting rod bearing liners or pistons with connecting rods), when installing, you can use the old gasket (1) of the balancing shaft block.

Installation

Install the balance shaft block (2) with the gasket (1) on the cylinder block and crankshaft bearing caps. Tighten the balance shaft assembly mounting bolts in two passes:
  • 1st pass: 20 Nm;
  • 2nd pass: tighten the bolts to an additional 45° angle.

Install the oil pick-up tube with a new sealing ring onto the oil pump and secure with bolts, tightening them to a torque of 8 N·m, having first applied a locking agent to the bolt threads.

Install the oil pickup tube bracket onto the balance shaft block and secure with bolts. Tighten the M6 bolts to 10 Nm and the M8 bolts to 20 Nm.

Install the oil pan (see the relevant chapter).
