Rear cover of the main gear unit - modifications
1. Since about August 1990, most final drive mechanisms have been equipped with a modified rear cover. The modified rear cover can be easily identified by the vertical cooling fins on the outer surface; early covers have a smooth outer surface. The modified back cover does not affect any of the procedures described in Section 8, but this changes the capacity of the final drive lubricant; the final drive now requires an additional 0.1 litre (0.2 pints) of lubricant.
Main Gear Rear Cover Gasket - Replacement
2. The rear cover gasket of the main gear mechanism can be replaced as described in Section 8, Chapter 5, noting the following points.
- a) The paper gasket is no longer installed between the lining and the casing. When installing, check that the mating surfaces of the lining and casing are clean and dry, then coat the lining flange with sealant.
- b) The rear cover mounting bolts must be replaced completely each time they are removed.
