Final Drive Rear Cover - Modifications
1. Since about August 1990, most final drive mechanisms have been equipped with a modified rear cover. The redesigned back cover can be easily identified by the vertical cooling fins on the outer surface; early lids have a smooth outer surface. The modified rear cover does not affect any of the procedures in Section 8, but it does change the capacity of the final drive lubricant; final drive now requires an additional 0.1 liters (0.2 pint) lubricant.
Final drive rear cover gasket - replacement
2. The final drive rear cover gasket can be replaced as described in Section 8, Chapter 5, noting the following points.
- a) The paper spacer is no longer installed between the cladding and casing. When installing, check that the mating surfaces of the cladding and casing are clean and dry, then coat the cladding flange with sealant.
- b) The rear cover bolts must be completely replaced each time they are removed.
