General description
1. From 1990 onwards, the 1.8 litre carburettor models were fitted with various versions of the Microprocessor Spark Timing System (MSTS). This later version, known as the El Plus system, has a self-diagnostic facility that can be used by a technician using a special TECH 1 electronic tester. This is a significant aid in troubleshooting.
2. The late El Plus ignition system is very similar to the earlier system, except for the following changes.
- a) There is no octane rating limitation for the ignition system. The ignition timing is set so that the engine will run normally on unleaded petrol and does not require any modification: if desired, leaded petrol can also be used without adverse side effects.
- b) Checking the ignition timing is no longer possible without using special Vauxhall/Opel electronic test equipment.
3. Taking into account the points from point 2, all other actions can be performed using the information given for the early 1.8 liter carburetor models in Section 4.
