Checking the drive gear clearance

Disconnect the wire from terminal M of the traction relay.

Connect the wire from the positive terminal of the battery (12 V) to the S terminal of the solenoid relay, and the wire from the negative terminal of the battery to the M terminal and the starter housing, and check that the freewheel clutch gear moves outward and stops.

Connect the wire from the positive terminal of the battery (12 V) to the S terminal of the solenoid…

Warning! This test must be completed within 30 seconds, otherwise the traction relay coil may burn out.

Measure the gap between the snap ring retainer and the front cover flange.

Gap: 0.05-1.5 mm

If the gap differs from the required one, adjust it by increasing or decreasing the number of shims between the traction relay and the front cover.

Checking the holding winding of the traction relay

Connect the wires and perform the check above.

Disconnect the excitation winding wire from terminal M of the traction relay.

If the starter gear does not move, then the holding winding of the traction relay is working normally.

If after disconnecting the wire from the starter housing the gear returns to its original position, then the system is working properly.

Checking the idle characteristics

Secure the starter in a vice with soft jaws and assemble the circuit shown in the figure.

Diagram for checking the idle speed characteristics of the starter: 1 - voltmeter; 2 - tachometer; 3 - 12V battery; 4 - ammeter; 5 - switch.

Warning. This check must be completed within 30 seconds, otherwise the starter may burn out.

Check the current consumed by the starter, the voltage and the speed of the starter shaft, making sure that the starter shaft rotates easily and smoothly.

Idle speed characteristics of the 6VD1-W engine starter:
  • Current consumption: 90 A
  • Voltage: 11 B
  • Starter shaft speed: 2700 min⁻¹
