Replacing the front axle pinion seal (Opel Frontera B)

Raise the vehicle and support it on supports.

Drain the oil from the front axle (see the relevant chapter).

Remove 6 bolts and gearbox guard.

Remove the front beam from the car (see the relevant chapter).

Remove the front propeller shaft.

Using a special device MKM-536-A, measure the initial torque of the gear bearing, and calculate the average value from 3-4 measurements.



Mark the relative position of the flange and the front axle drive gear, then use the special device KM-468-C to hold the flange from turning and unscrew the flange mounting nut.



Using a suitable puller, remove the flange from the front axle drive pinion.

Warning: Do not use a hammer to remove the flange.

Using a screwdriver as a lever, remove the oil seal from the rear axle housing, being careful not to damage the oil seal seat.

Installation

Check the condition of the oil seal seat and the sealing surface of the front axle drive pinion shaft for wear and damage.

Lubricate the new seal with oil and install it into the front axle housing socket using a special tool.



Align the previously applied marks and install the flange on the front axle drive pinion shaft. Using a special device KM-468-C, hold the flange from turning and tighten the flange nut.

Warnings:

• Do not use a hammer when installing the flange.
• Do not overtighten the flange mounting nut to the front axle drive pinion shaft.

Using a special device MKM-536-A, measure the initial torque of the gear bearing, which should be 80% of the previously measured torque. The measurement must be taken during the play check period between the pinion and the gear wheel, and the shafts must not rotate.





Gradually tighten the flange nut to crush the soft gasket, frequently checking the initial torque of the pinion bearing and tighten the nut until the required torque is achieved.

If the correct starting torque of the pinion bearing is exceeded by overtightening the nut, replace the soft lining.

Connect the propeller shaft to the front axle.

Fill the front axle housing with the required oil.

Install the front wheel and lower the vehicle.
