Front axle (Opel Frontera B)

Removal

Raise the vehicle and support it on supports.

Remove the front wheels.

Drain the oil from the front axle (see the relevant chapter).

Drain the oil from the shift mechanism while driving (see the relevant chapter).

Remove the 2 caliper mounting bolts, lift the caliper up and secure it to the front suspension setup with soft wire.



Remove the ABS sensor from the steering knuckle.

Unscrew the 4 nuts, remove the 4 bolts and remove the front suspension beam from the chassis.



Loosen the nuts and bolts and disconnect the propeller shaft from the front axle gearbox flange.

Remove the left wheel hub drive flange from the drive shaft (see the relevant chapter).





Loosen the nut securing the ball joint pin of the steering rod end to the steering knuckle. Using the KM-787 puller, push the ball joint pin of the steering rod end out of the steering knuckle.



Remove the cotter pin, unscrew the nut and use the KM-787 puller to remove the upper ball joint from the left steering knuckle.



Remove the cotter pin, unscrew the nut and use a suitable puller to remove the lower ball joint from the left steering knuckle.





Remove the left wheel hub with the steering knuckle from the drive shaft.

Support the front axle using a hydraulic jack and a wooden block.

Disconnect the hoses from the shift mechanism while driving.



Remove the bolts securing the right drive shaft to the front axle.

Loosen the nuts and remove the bolts securing the front and rear bushings of the right front axle bracket to the chassis.



Loosen the nuts and remove the bolts securing the front and rear bushings of the left front axle bracket to the chassis.





Lower the front axle together with the left drive shaft and remove it from under the car.

Disconnect the left drive shaft from the front axle.

Installation

Check the bushings in the front axle brackets for damage and wear.



Place the bridge on a hydraulic jack.

Install the left drive shaft onto the front axle and secure with bolts, tightening them to a torque of 116 Nm.

Raise the front axle together with the spruce drive shaft.

Install the left front axle bracket to the chassis and secure the front and rear bracket bushings with bolts and nuts, tightening them to a torque of 152 N·m.



Install the right front axle bracket to the chassis and secure the front and rear bracket bushings with bolts and nuts, tightening them to a torque of 152 N·m.

Install the right drive shaft to the front axle and secure with bolts, tightening them to a torque of 116 N·m.

Connect the hoses to the shift mechanism while driving.



Install the left wheel hub with the steering knuckle onto the drive shaft.



Install the upper ball joint onto the steering knuckle. Tighten the upper ball joint pin mounting nut to a torque of 98 N·m and turn it until the first alignment of the locking hole with the slot in the crown nut. Install a new cotter pin.

Install the lower ball joint onto the steering knuckle. Tighten the lower ball joint pin mounting nut to a torque of 147 N·m and turn it until the first alignment of the locking hole with the slot in the crown nut. Install a new cotter pin.

Install the ball joint pin of the left tie rod end into the steering knuckle and secure it with a nut.

Install the left hub drive flange onto the drive shaft (see the relevant chapter).



Connect the cardan shaft to the front axle gearbox flange.



Install the front suspension beam to the chassis and secure with 4 bolts and nuts, tightening them to a torque of 82 N·m.

Install the ABS sensor on the left steering knuckle.

Install the caliper on the left steering knuckle and secure with 2 bolts, tightening them to a torque of 155 Nm.



Fill the front axle housing with oil.

Install the front wheel and lower the vehicle.
