Camshaft housing and camshaft — disassembly and assembly (Opel Ascona C)

1. Remove the camshaft housing from the cylinder head (see section 8). Remove all auxiliary equipment (fuel pump, distributor, injector rail, etc. depending on the model). Place an open-end wrench on the chamfers on the camshaft and, holding it from turning, unscrew the bolt securing the camshaft sprocket. Remove the sprocket.

2. Working from the other end of the camshaft housing, remove the 2 Allen head screws securing the camshaft lock plate.

3. Remove the locking plate.

4. First pull out the camshaft from the side of its housing that is closer to the distributor and remove it, being careful not to damage the camshaft bearings.



5. Before installing the camshaft, lubricate the bearings.





6. Install the camshaft lock plate together with the fixing screws and check the axial movement of the camshaft. If it exceeds the specified value, the lock plate should be replaced.

7. Replace the seal in its holder (see photo).



8. Holding the camshaft, tighten the bolt of its sprocket to the required torque.
