Engine — removal (automatic transmission remains on the car) (Opel Ascona C)

1. Perform the operations specified in section 18 for removing the engine from the vehicle without a manual transmission (paragraphs 1-8).

2. Disconnect the downshift cable from the carburetor or throttle body (depending on the model).

3. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the starter.

4. Loosen the bolts and remove the torque converter cover. Only on 1.6 and 1.8 engines, unscrew the bolt and remove the torsional vibration damper from the crankshaft.

5. Loosen the bolts and disconnect the drive disk from the torque converter. To prevent the disk from rotating, block its toothed ring with a large screwdriver. When assembling the drive disc to the torque converter, new bolts will be required.

6. Support the automatic transmission with a jack.

7. Connect the hoists to the engine and lift it slightly to remove its weight from the cushions.

8. Remove the bolts securing the engine and gearbox to each other.

9. Disconnect the engine support brackets.

10. Move the engine away from the transmission until the locating pins are exposed and then rotate the engine slightly so that it can be lifted out of the engine compartment.
