Engine — removal and installation (automatic transmission on a car) (Opel Astra F)

Removal

Perform the operations listed in the first 17 points of the previous section "Engine - removal and installation" (mechanical gearbox).

Make sure all relevant hoses, pipes and wires are disconnected and located outside the engine.

Remove the three upper engine-to-transmission mounting bolts (access through the engine compartment). Note the location of the brackets.

Raise the front of the car with a jack, support it with stands, remove the crankshaft pulley and the front section of the exhaust system.

Loosen the bolts and remove the cover of the conical gearbox housing.

If the torque converter and drive plate need to be installed, make marks between the torque converter and the drive plate to ensure proper assembly.

Remove the three torque converter and drive plate mounting bolts. Turn the crankshaft with a socket wrench, jamming the drive plate gears. Do not use the bolts any more.

Position the hoist and rigging to the engine brackets and secure it in place.

Support the transmission with a jack, using a wooden block to distribute the load.

Remove the lower transmission-to-engine mounting bolts, then manipulate the engine to separate it.

Carefully remove the engine with a hoist, being careful not to damage anything in the engine compartment.

After removing the engine, the gearbox can be secured with a wooden block.

Installation

If the torque converter remains in place, begin installation by cutting threads for the torque converter mounting bolts to the drive disc using an M10x1.25 mm tap.



Support the engine with a hoist and carefully lower it into place in the engine compartment.

If necessary, remove the metal strip holding the torque converter in the transmission housing.

Make sure the transmission is seated on the dowel pins in the cylinder block, then install the three upper engine mounting bolts to the transmission without tightening them fully.

Tighten the lower transmission bolts, but do not tighten them completely at this stage.

Apply thread locking compound to the engine mount to body bolts, then install them and tighten to the specified torque.

Tighten all engine-to-transmission mounting bolts to the specified torque and retract the lifting devices.

If the same torque converter and drive plate are being installed, carefully rotate the crankshaft to center the marks made before removal.

Install new torque converter-to-drive plate bolts and tighten to specified torque. Rotate the crankshaft to gain access to each bolt.

Install the gearbox cone housing cover.

Perform the last 12 operations of the same previous section (starting with the installation of the front section of the exhaust system).

Check the transmission fluid level and top up if necessary as indicated in chapter 1.
