Service indication display / selected transmission mode; 6. Odometer / resettable odometer display; 7. Button for resetting the resettable current mileage counter
Instrumentation
The layout of meters in the instrument cluster is shown in illustration 16.1.
Speedometer
The speedometer is placed on the right side of the instrument cluster (see illustration 16.1) and shows the vehicle speed in km/h.
Attention! Always obey the speed limit set by the Rules of the Road (SDA), follow the speed limit signs!
Tachometer
The tachometer is located on the left side of the instrument cluster (see illustration 16.1) and shows the engine speed in thousands of revolutions per minute (arrow reading should be multiplied by 100). In order to avoid engine failure, it is forbidden to exceed the maximum permissible speed of the crankshaft (the tachometer needle should never enter the red zone of the scale).
Attention! If the tachometer needle approaches the red sector of the scale, you should immediately switch to a higher gear!
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge dial is mounted in the instrument cluster to the right of the speedometer (see illustration 16.1) and serves for visual monitoring of the amount of fuel remaining in the tank.
The device shows the APPROXIMATE level of fuel in the tank. The error in readings of the fuel gauge is minimal when the car is in a strictly horizontal position. When driving on winding or hilly roads, the error of the instrument increases. When the ignition is turned off, the meter needle moves to the lower mark of the scale.
Minimum fuel indicator lamp in the lower right corner of the instrument cluster (see below) activated when there is a small amount of fuel left in the tank (the meter needle drops to the lower left sector of the scale), and warns about the beginning of the use of the fuel reserve. Activation of the control lamp in flashing mode warns of the inadmissibility of a further decrease in the amount of fuel in the tank - fill the tank as soon as possible.
Attention! It is strictly forbidden to drive to an empty tank - this can lead to failure of the catalytic converter of exhaust gases!
When diesel models run out of fuel, it is necessary to remove air from the fuel system, this is a rather laborious procedure, so try to replenish fuel in the tank in a timely manner.
Coolant temperature meter
The fuel gauge dial is mounted in the instrument cluster to the left of the tachometer (see illustration 16.1) and serves for visual monitoring of the temperature regime of the engine.
Meter readings may vary within the operating temperature range, depending on the ambient temperature and vehicle driving mode. During normal operation of all systems, the temperature of the coolant should not go beyond the range of 80-100°C (with warm engine).
During operation, increased pressure is created in the cooling system, which allows the vehicle to continue to operate for some time when the temperature of the coolant exceeds 100°C - the corresponding control lamp on the instrument panel should light up (see Section 16). Reduce engine load as soon as possible, stop vehicle if necessary, check coolant level and reduce temperature. If you do not take appropriate measures in case of overheating, further movement of the car can lead to serious damage to the power unit.
Odometer/resettable odometer display
The indication display is mounted in the lower part of the instrument cluster under the speedometer dial (see illustration 16.1). The indication fields of the odometer and the resettable odometer are located one above the other: the odometer is at the bottom, the counter is at the top. The odometer records the total mileage of the vehicle since it was put into service. The total mileage is permanently displayed on the display. The resettable trip meter allows you to track the distance traveled by the vehicle since the last reset.
Resetting the resettable trip meter is carried out when the ignition is on with the button built into the instrument cluster to the right of the display (see illustration 16.1).
If equipped, in the upper left corner of the display there is an indicator of the front passenger seat occupied recognition system , which lights up when the ignition is turned on and goes out after about 4 seconds, confirming that the system is working. Failure to deactivate indicates a malfunction of the front passenger seat occupancy recognition system (except when a special Opel child seat with transponders is installed in the front seat).
Service indication display / selected transmission mode
16.2 Service indication display
The service indication display is mounted in the lower part of the instrument cluster under the tachometer dial (see illustration 16.2) and is designed to display information about the state and functioning of some vehicle systems and about the mileage remaining until the next maintenance (THAT). In addition, on models equipped with an automatic transmission (AT) (see Sections 23 and 24), the display has additional fields (see illustration 16.3) to indicate the operating mode of the gearbox. When the selector lever is switched to the appropriate position, the selected transmission mode is displayed in the lower right field of the display:
- R - Parking
- R - Reverse
- N - Neutral gear
- D - Automatic smooth switching mode.
- A - Automatic stepping mode (CVTronic)
- 1-5 - Manual mode - currently engaged gear (AT system Active Select)
- 1-6 - Manual mode - currently engaged gear (CVTronic)
16.3 Service indication display / selected transmission mode
When the winter driving mode is activated, the indicator lights up in the upper right field of the display.
Pilot lamps, indicator lights and service indication display icons
Note: Some warning lamps/indicators are built into the appropriate switches located on the instrument panel/center console of the vehicle, and their operation is described in the description of the respective system.
Note: In case of modification of the model range and installation of modern systems and equipment, the combination of control lamps and indicators can be supplemented.
A whole complex of control lamps and indicator lights is built into the assembly of the car's instrument cluster (see illustration 16.1), with the help of which the driver receives important information about the serviceability / violation of the functioning of the main units and systems of the car (pilot lamps), and can also monitor the health of the activation / deactivation of the corresponding nodes and systems (indicator lights). Below is a list and description of the warning lamps, indicator lights, and pictograms of the service indication display mounted in the instrument cluster.
Note: Depending on the model and equipment, not all of the following warning lamps/indicators may be installed on the vehicle.
Instrument cluster field
Engine oil pressure warning lamp. The lamp is activated when the ignition is switched on. Failure of this lamp to turn off after the engine is started, as well as its activation while driving, indicate a dangerous drop in engine oil pressure. If the lamp comes on while the vehicle is in constant or flashing mode, pull off the road to a safe place and stop the engine immediately.
Attention! Operating the vehicle with the warning light on can cause serious damage and engine failure!
Check the engine oil level and correct if necessary. If the control lamp works at a normal oil level, the car should be driven to the service station for more detailed diagnostics and the necessary remedial repairs.
Note: The engine oil pressure warning light is not designed to monitor the oil level in the system. A dipstick is used to check the oil level (see chapter 1). In addition, when the engine oil level drops, the corresponding icon is displayed on the service indication display (see below).
Warning lamp for low brake fluid level / parking brake charging indicator. When the ignition is switched on, the control lamp lights up continuously when the parking brake is applied, reminding the driver to release it before starting to move. If the warning light stays on after the parking brake is released, or comes on while driving, this usually indicates an excessive drop in the brake fluid level, you should stop and check the brake fluid level in the HHC reservoir, and carefully inspect the components of the brake hydraulic circuit for leaks. If necessary, eliminate the reasons for the development of leaks and add fresh fluid to the reservoir. If the brake fluid level is normal, contact the service station to check the operation of the relevant components of the electrical circuit.
Attention! Under no circumstances should you drive a vehicle with a faulty brake system!
The charge control lamp is activated when the ignition is turned on and should go out a few seconds after the engine is started. Failure of the lamp to turn off, as well as its activation while driving, indicate a malfunction in the charge system - it is necessary to move off the road in a safe place, turn off the engine and check the condition of the multirib belt (see chapter 1). A break or loosening of the belt may be accompanied by malfunctions of the engine cooling system, and on diesel models, in addition, by the termination of the vacuum booster.
Attention! Do not continue driving if the belt is loose, damaged or missing - contact your nearest service station!
Warning lamp for failures of additional security systems (SRS). When the ignition is switched on, the control lamp should light up. If the SRS is working, the lamp will go out after about 4 seconds after switching on, - if the lamp does not turn off, does not light up at all, or is activated while driving - this may indicate a malfunction in the airbag circuits, or devices of automatic emergency seat belt tensioners, - the car should at the first opportunity, drive to the service station to carry out the necessary diagnostics for the implementation of the appropriate restoration repair.
Coolant temperature control lamp. Activation of the lamp while the engine is running warns of a dangerous increase in coolant temperature - immediately stop the car in a safe place and measure the coolant level, make appropriate adjustments.
Attention! driving for a long time with the indicator lamp on can lead to engine failure due to overheating!
Control lamp «Fasten seat belts» reminds the driver to wear a seat belt. The lamp comes on when the ignition is switched on and stays on until the driver's seat belt buckle is engaged.
Note: The need to fasten seat belts will be additionally reminded by a signal gong.
The diesel engine preheat indicator lamp lights up only at low ambient temperatures when the ignition is switched on, indicates the activation of the preheat system and goes out after the glow plugs have warmed up to the required temperature. The engine must not be started until the control lamp turns off.
Note: If the lamp does not go out for a long time, this may indicate a malfunction in the preheating system - contact a service station.
Anti-lock brake warning light (ABS) briefly activated when the ignition is switched on (at this moment, the ABS self-diagnosis system is activated, accompanied by a characteristic noise) and should go out after a few seconds. Failure of the lamp to turn off, as well as its activation while driving, indicates a malfunction of the ABS, - as soon as possible, it is necessary to diagnose the brake system using special equipment or drive the car to a service station to perform the necessary refurbishment.
Note: When the control lamp is on, the anti-lock brake system will not operate, while the brake system continues to function normally.
Indicator of deterioration of grip properties of the road surface / disabling anti-skid (ESP) / anti slip (TS) systems. On ESP/TC equipped models, this indicator comes on when the ignition is turned on. If the anti-skid system is working, the indicator will turn off after a few seconds.
While the vehicle is moving, the indicator is activated in flashing mode when the ESP / TC system is turned on, and thereby warns the driver about the deterioration of the traction properties of the road surface and that the vehicle's wheels are on the verge of slipping, while the vehicle automatically slows down.
Note: During the operation of the ESP / TC, a characteristic noise is heard in the engine compartment.
The failure of the indicator to turn off, as well as its activation while driving in a constant mode, confirms the fact that the anti-skid / traction control system is turned off or malfunctions - you can continue the trip, however, the vehicle's directional stability may deteriorate when the properties of the road surface change. In the event of a system malfunction, contact a service station as soon as possible.
This indicator is used to confirm the correct activation of the fog lights (with appropriate equipment). When the headlights are turned off, the indicator goes out.
This indicator is used to confirm the correct activation of the fog lights (with appropriate equipment). When the lights are turned off, the indicator goes out.
This indicator is used to confirm that the main beam headlights are activated correctly. When the headlights are switched to low beam, the indicator goes out.
Movement indicator controlled by the tempostat. This indicator (with appropriate equipment) lights up briefly when the ignition is switched on and should go out after a few seconds. While driving, it is activated and remains lit as long as the tempostat is activated.
The minimum fuel reserve warning lamp warns of the need to fill the fuel tank when the fuel gauge needle drops to the lower left sector of the scale (see above).
Warning lamp for failures of the engine management system («Check engine») is activated when the ignition is switched on and should go out a few seconds after the engine is started. Failure of the lamp to turn off, as well as its activation while driving, indicate a malfunction of the engine control system - it is possible to exceed the permissible exhaust gas toxicity standards. Contact an Opel workshop to troubleshoot and fix the problem. The activation of the warning lamp in flashing mode with the engine running indicates a malfunction that can lead to failure of the catalytic converter. If it is necessary to continue driving, reduce the fuel supply with the gas pedal so that the control lamp stops flashing and burns continuously - contact a service station as soon as possible.
If equipped, this indicator is used to confirm that the direction indicators are working while the car is moving with a trailer. It is activated in flashing mode with the frequency of the pointers. Failure to activate when the turn signal is on alerts the driver to the failure of one of the turn signal lamps on the trailer or towing vehicle.
Arrow-shaped turn/alarm indicators have a green glow and serve to monitor the correct functioning of the corresponding turn indicators.
The direction of the indicator arrows coincides with the selected direction of change of the vehicle's course. The indicators function in a flashing mode with a frequency corresponding to the frequency of blinking of the direction indicators. Rapid flashing of one of the indicators indicates a lamp burnout of any of the indicators of the corresponding turn, replace the burned-out lamp as soon as possible (see chapter 12), so as not to create accidents on the roads. The activation of the alarm is accompanied by the simultaneous flashing of indicators for both directions.
Service indication display
The service indication display is mounted in the lower part of the instrument cluster under the tachometer dial (see above). When certain events occur, corresponding icons appear in the display field, informing the driver about malfunctions in systems controlled by electrical sensors and electronic systems. Below is a list of the main icons.
Activation of the immobilizer system. This icon comes on when the ignition is switched on and should go out after a few seconds. If the indicator stays on, the key is not recognized by the system as authorized. Remove the key from the ignition and try again. In the event of another failure, try to turn on the ignition with a spare key and contact an Opel workshop for help.
Fault in the electro-hydraulic power steering system. The appearance of this icon in the display field warns that the power steering has ceased to function - it is possible to continue driving, but remember that cornering requires much more effort than when driving in normal conditions.
Malfunction of the automatic device for adjusting the tilt of the optical axes of the headlights. On models of the corresponding configuration, this pictogram is displayed when the automatic headlight tilt angle adjuster fails, the malfunction must be eliminated immediately! Continued driving with a failed regulator in conditions of limited visibility (dusk, night time) creates a risk of dazzling drivers of oncoming and passing vehicles in front, as well as the occurrence of an accident due to poor visibility. Correct the problem without delay and contact the service station, where there is special equipment for headlight adjustment.
Failure of the parking assistance system. Flash icon activation (flashing) indicates the occurrence of failures in the system due to external interference - contamination of the sensors, external sources of ultrasound (e.g. jackhammers, garbage trucks) and so on. When the cause of the failure is eliminated, the system returns to normal operation - the indicator goes out.
If the icon is permanently on, this indicates a malfunction of the system - contact Opel's service station.
Electronic immobilizer/engine/gearbox failure/water in fuel filter (diesel models). The appearance of this icon in the display field when the engine is running indicates a malfunction in the electronic equipment of the engine or automatic transmission. The electronic system switches to emergency mode, fuel consumption may increase and the ability to drive the vehicle is limited. In some cases, the malfunction can be eliminated by turning off and restarting the engine. If the icon continues to light up while the engine is running, contact a workshop for assistance.
Note: Short-term one-time illumination of the pictogram does not matter.
The activation of the icon in flashing mode after the ignition is turned on indicates a malfunction in the engine start blocking system, the engine cannot be started. In this case, turn off the ignition and turn it on again. If the icon continues to flash, you should try to start the engine using the spare key and contact a workshop for help. On diesel models, the activation of the warning light may also indicate the presence of water in the fuel filter, at the same time on the service indication display (see above) a corresponding message appears. It is necessary to remove the water from the filter - if necessary, contact an Opel workshop.
This icon is displayed when the trunk lid/tailgate is opened and stays lit until the lid/tailgate is closed.
Failure of lamps of outdoor lighting devices. With the appropriate configuration, this icon is displayed when one or more lamps of outdoor lighting devices burn out. Check all appliances and replace the failed lamp (see chapter 12).
Brake lining wear indicator. On models equipped with brake pads with built-in wear sensors, this icon illuminates to alert the driver that the brake pads are worn to the minimum thickness and need to be replaced (see chapter 9).
Engine oil level indication. The pictogram is displayed when the engine oil level drops to the minimum allowable value - check the oil level and, if necessary, make the appropriate adjustment (see chapter 1).
Coolant level indication. The pictogram is displayed when the coolant level drops to the minimum allowable value - check the fluid level, make appropriate adjustments if necessary (see chapter 1).
Indication of service intervals. This icon is displayed simultaneously with the indications of the mileage remaining until the next maintenance, and reminds the driver of the need to take the car to a service station for appropriate work. More information is provided in Chapter 1.
Tire pressure drop. On eligible models, if this icon illuminates in red, it warns of a dangerous drop in air pressure in the corresponding tire - immediately pull off the road in a safe place and check the air pressure in the tires. If the icon is yellow, the pressure drop is negligible, check the pressure as soon as possible and correct accordingly. See Section 27 for more information on pressure control systems.
Tire pressure monitoring system malfunction. On eligible models, the appearance of this icon in the display window while the vehicle is moving indicates a malfunction in the tire pressure monitoring system - contact a specialist as soon as possible.
This pictogram is used to warn about opening / loose closing of one or more car doors.
