Changing engine oil and oil filter (Opel Vectra B)

Maintenance work

• Change the oil only when the engine is warm! Therefore, warm up the engine by driving the car.
• If possible, raise the car horizontally (support me!) or drive it onto the ramp.
• Place a suitable container under the crankcase (see photo below).
• Unscrew the drain plug with a spanner and drain the oil. Be careful, it is hot!
• If you have only lifted the car from the front, you will need to lower it again to drain the used oil completely. Make sure that you do not damage or tip over the receiving container.
• Place a collecting container under the oil filter.
• Unscrew the oil filter with the strap wrench shown on the next page. If the filter is firmly seated, poke a sharp screwdriver through the metal housing (be careful, hot oil is leaking out) and unscrew the filter with a screwdriver.
• Lightly coat the O-ring on the new oil filter with grease.
• Do not use engine oil that may be mistaken for a leak when visually inspected at the end of the job.
• Screw the filter on by hand without any tools.

The right equipment for an amateur oil change:
1 - funnel for pouring waste oil;
2 - sufficient volume of engine oil;
3 - oiler;
4 - canister for used oil;
5 - oil canister with cut out side wall for drained oil;
6 - oil filter;
7 - tension band wrench for unscrewing the oil filter.

At the deepest point of the crankcase is a threaded drain plug. Unscrew the threaded plug not with an open-end wrench, but with an overhead or socket wrench and a lever.

• Wipe the drain plug clean and screw it on with a new sealing ring; do not tighten too much or you may damage the guide threads in the oil pan.
• Pour in oil.
• Start the engine, check the oil for leaks.

Filling volumes
