Checking the engine oil level (Opel Vectra B)

Constant control

After every second refueling, you should take hold of the dipstick to measure the oil level. During the break-in period or with an old engine with increased oil consumption, the check is carried out after each full filling of the fuel tank.

• Place the car on a level surface.
• After turning off a preheated engine, let it cool for at least five minutes to allow all the oil to drain into the oil pan. It is even better to check the oil level before the first start when the engine is still cold.
• Remove the dipstick - be careful when the engine is hot, the nearby exhaust manifold is very hot; wipe it with a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel, push it back in as far as it will go, wait a moment, and remove it.

You can see the oil level on the rod: it should be between the markings; in this case everything is fine.



If the oil level only reaches the lower mark, then it needs to be topped up.

Tip: Don't let this confuse you: high-quality oil darkens after a short time. This only proves that it is "working" correctly and contains dirt in suspension. But this is not a sign that the oil needs to be changed.

The amount of oil between the lower and upper marks on the dipstick for measuring its level is 1 liter. The oil level should not fall below the lower mark. Although a lack of a quarter of a liter of oil for the engine is not yet dangerous. But if there is not enough oil, then with a sharp driving style of Vectra, the oil pressure can drop to a dangerous level, which will immediately be shown by the oil pressure control lamp.

Topping up oil

• With a moderate driving style, it is enough to add oil, as already mentioned, if its level has reached the lower mark on the dipstick.
• If you drive aggressively, it is recommended to add oil when the level is in the lower quarter between the two marks on the dipstick. More oil can perform the cooling task better.
• You won't do your engine any good if you fill it much higher than the upper mark on the dipstick. In this case, too much oil gets through the crankcase exhaust into the combustion chambers and burns there.

Tip: Oil is rarely sold in half-liter cans, mostly in liter containers that cannot be resealed. If you bought inexpensive oil in a larger container, you should pour it into a small, mineral oil-resistant canister and put it in the trunk. Also pour the remainder of the opened liter container into the same canister as a reserve for the road.

Can oils be mixed?

Motor oils from all manufacturers can be mixed without any harm, including seasonal and all-season oils (see next page.). Such miscibility of oils without harmful consequences is one of the main requirements of international oil standards. The decisive factor is compliance with the specification.
