Where to change oil?
- In our own experience, oil changes at a car service are the most expensive, as only the most expensive grades of oil are offered there. In addition, the engine often has time to cool down while the old oil drains, so that not all dirt is washed out. Some workshops charge extra for oil filter change work.
- At gas stations, you usually do not have to wait long for your turn. There you can choose cheaper oil from the assortment offered for sale, and the work of a gas station employee is included in the price of the oil itself.
- There is no objection to changing the oil in self-service mode at a gas station using an oil suction pump if the oil filter is also changed.
- Changing the oil at home makes sense if you bought the oil at a bargain price (hardware store, wholesale market, department store, or gas station oil).
How often do you need to change the oil?
The factory manual calls for an oil change for the Vectra once a year. Or every 15,000 km if the annual mileage is significantly higher. But someone who drives exclusively long distances should consider 15,000 km as the upper limit, although at the expense of the engine's need for more oil, new oil is constantly being added. Or the annual interval shifts slightly.
If Vectra drives mainly short distances, it is recommended to change the oil every six months. The replacement time should be spring and autumn, because. fuel condensate, which appears intensively in winter, must merge with oil before the warm season.
Despite this, even shorter intervals are recommended if the oil level rises due to fuel condensation in winter.
What will be needed?
The following aids you need when changing the oil:
- Oil according to specification (cheaper in 3, 4 or 5 liter canisters).
- Oil filter suitable for Opel Vectra.
- New O-ring for the drain plug,
- Container for draining old oil. For this purpose, an old oil canister with a cut-out side wall or an unnecessary basin is suitable.
- An old oil can is useful for transporting old oil.
- An oiler will make it easier to fill in fresh engine oil.
- Belt tension wrench for loosening the filter fastening.
Where to put used oil?
In our time, when there is a growing awareness of the need to protect the environment, everyone knows the consequences of the ingress of used oil into groundwater. Proper disposal of used oil during an oil change is made very simple thanks to the waste disposal law: engine oil can be returned free of charge where it was purchased. Trade is obliged to accept used oil, as proof of the purchase made, you only have to present the appropriate receipt. Even easier, you can use the used oil pumping station at a gas station, in this case you do not need to do anything, it will surely fall into the used oil tank.
Tip: Waste oil is accepted by specialized companies at petrol stations, car services, etc. and handed over for further processing. To do this, the oil must not be mixed with other liquids.
