Oil specifications
Obsolete designation of quality «HD-CI», which still pops up in individual cases, was already replaced many years ago by more detailed oil specifications, which are developed by various institutions based on different, but ultimately still similar test conditions. Oils that have successfully passed the tests, as proof of quality, may have information on the assigned specification on the packaging.
Quality checks, for example, are carried out by: American Petroleum Institute (American Petroleum Institute — API) and the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (SSMS).
It doesn't matter if you bought your engine oil from a gas station or a supermarket, at least one of the required oil specifications must be printed on the packaging.
Oil of the required specification
Opel strongly recommends only the following specifications for its gasoline engines:
If the oil has one of these specifications, then you can safely buy it - even if it is significantly cheaper than the same well-known branded oil.
Tip: Oils designated API CD or API CC are purely diesel oils and should therefore not be used in a gasoline engine. Exception: double designation oil, such as API SG/CD or API SH/CD. In these cases, in the dual designation, only the specification for the SG or SH gasoline engine is suitable for us.
