Note: When installing, use new steering gear mounting bolts and new tie rod to steering gear bolt connector plates. Use new o-rings when connecting the hydraulic pipe coupling.
Removing
1. Proceed as described in points 1-3 Chapter 37.
2. Disconnect the hoses from the pipes at the left end of the steering gear. Be prepared for fluid to come out and plug exposed tube and hose openings to prevent dirt from entering and further loss of fluid.
3. To create enough space to remove the steering gear, remove, where applicable, the relay box located on the left side of the engine compartment (see Section 12).
4. Proceed as described in points 4-9 Chapter 37.
Bulkhead
5. Power steering overhaul is not recommended by manufacturers.
6. Fluid leaks from the brake pipe couplings can usually be repaired by replacing the coupling seals.
7. Replacement of the protective cover is described in Chapter 36.
8. Do not attempt to adjust the power steering.
9. Contact your Opel dealer for any damage to the steering gear.
Installation
10. Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following.
11. Before installation, center the steering gear. To do this, calculate the number of revolutions of the mechanism shaft required to move the rack from one extreme position to another and rotate the shaft from one of the extreme positions by half the calculated revolutions. Note that it may be necessary to remove the plugs from the ends of the pipes so that the rail can mix.
12. Use new mounting bolts when installing the steering gear clamps to the bulkhead.
13. Connecting plate (plates) bolts of fastening of steering rods to the steering gear must be replaced during installation.
14. Connect the flexible coupling to the steering shaft (centering the rack and steering wheel), so that the top pinch bolt is horizontal (see point 1 Chapter 31).
15. When connecting the hose to the tube, replace the O-ring on the coupling.
16. Finally, top up the fluid level and bleed the hydraulic line as described in Section 1.
